jh994013 posted : I can't speak for your location, but at my office, when a truck is rolled/sent for a work order, we usually check the signal with out meters, run a modem test, a VoIP test, and then upload the results to the server. But I agree, there shouldn't really be any fee when they can just upgrade your service from the office.

Says he's bringing his supervisor back tomorrow. We'll see what happens. I think it's just a totally oversold node, because when i came home from work at 1 this afternoon, i was hitting right at 10mbit, which still isnt 12, but i wouldnt complain as much if it were a consistent 10 mbit, instead of 3-10.

BTW, tomorrow morning I will be setting up a speedtest server at the office in Charleston. Couldnt get to it today, and as ashamed I am to admit it, I cant remotely administer that box (linux) through anything other than SSH. (command prompt for those who dont know).

GeorgetownTX posted : Yes, server traffic and the routers between the server and the backbone provider used by SL make a big difference in results.

I wish speedtest.net provided more info on their individual servers' capacity & utilization. speakeasy.net/speedtest choosing Dallas gives me fairly consistent results. However, speakeasy's Seattle test only ran 4Mbit while speedtest.net shows my full 8Mbit to Seattle. So the capacity/utilization of the various servers and their routing to Level3's network definitely influences results.

It would be very helpful if SL would put up an internal speed test site hosted in Tyler where all the traffic gets routed before hitting Level3 so that we could accurately determine in-network speeds to help isolate our own individual connection/node problems without throwing in the variables of Level3 routers and 3rd-party speed test server capacities. Hint hint, but is anyone listening? Pete?

nnaarrnn posted : No phone or video service. Cant see the point in a home phone when my wife and I both have cell phones.

The speed is all over the place no matter how many times I try a single server, or bounce back and forth. Regardless of where I'm testing, if there's a major difference from one place to another then suddenlink has some routing issues. I do know that all my traffic is going to TX first, which is wierd since there's a UUnet backbone here in charleston. When it was Charter, it hit that instead of being encapsulated to TX for whatever reason. I used to have a 20ms ping to my SSH server at my office (nTelos Metro-E fiber 10M/10M), now it's well over 100, with an average over 200. It's less than 30ms on my neighbors Verizon DSL line.

Mid-november when i first had the service installed, there was new cable run from the pole. It has one female to female connector when it hits the house, and then the line (just as new) goes straight into the modem. Total length of cable from pole to modem = around 100'. The techs that were here saw the 10mbit average on all the speedtests i was doing, and had me go to »speedtest.wv.suddenlink.net/ to test. Same results, and they said "there ya go" and left. I'm beginning to wonder though, if it's the video signal trap they've put on the line that's causing the fluctuation in speeds, and a max hovering around 10Mbit. From my desktop to my router it's all gigabit, and 100mbit from router to cable modem.

One thing to note is that i do own my modem. Bought it used from Suddenlink 2 months ago when I signed up for their services. I'm not at home right now, so I dont know the model, but it's an Ambit.

Pete Abel posted : I believe that's correct. If you don't need a service call, you don't need one, and shouldn't be charged for it. That said, there may be factors involved here of which I'm not aware. Any issues, please IM me or email me and we'll figure it out.

It's my understanding that the only reason there's a service call is to make sure you have the equipment/wiring needed to get the advertised speeds. If you're getting them already, I think they'll gladly cancel the service call. If that's not the case, IM me on this forum or email me directly at pete.abel@suddenlink.com and I'll look into it for you.

Pete...are you saying that if I sign up for the 12/768 service and I'm getting the advertised speeds, then cancel my service call I won't get charged the $70 fee?
