A bit more $$ though.

I made some changes (and removed the fan and the USB flash given comments elsewhere that ReadyBoost is worthless.) I am leaning more towards Vista 64. I hope it is not a mistake.

I am now waiting for the Q9450. I also need to figure out my tax hit from Uncle Sam to see if there is any left over for my new computer.
JimE posted : Cases are always a personal taste, but I'm sure you can find something of similar space for much less money.

As for Vista, Home Premium seems to be the way to go and it should be cheaper.

You also chose the Office 2007 upgrade package, you will need a previous version for the upgrade to function.

Also, if you really need 4GB (most people do not, it's only necessary if you need to use multiple RAM intensive apps simultaneously or you have apps specifically written to use large amounts of RAM (most aren't)), then you will want to use a 64 bit OS. The 32 bit version will only recognize a tad over 3GB. The problem with 64 bit will be driver and software support.
--
Google is your Friend

snappakazoo posted : As for OEM, I thought if I was buying a new computer (or the parts) I was eligible for OEM.

As for Vista 64-bit, I don't 'need' it and the more I think about it, the more I think it will be a headache. I was trying to be more 'cutting edge' by going with 64-bit.

I don't plan on formally overclocking, but my current ASUS board has a feature for pushing things slightly, so I figured the extra fan might come in handy.

And I changed the burners to Samsung. FYI, I am getting two DVD burners as I make two copies when I make back-ups. One for on-site, one off-site.
--
Let me 'splain. [pause] No, there is too much.
anon posted : "I figure the XFX card is more than adequate"

Yes there is no point in getting the $150 card.

Are you sure you really need 4GB ram and a 64 bit OS?

"Did I choose the right version of Vista 64-bit...is the OEM version is the right one?"

You need to look into that carefully. An oem license is designed to be tied to one machine/motherboard and not be transferable like a retail license. Once it is installed on a machine it is supposed to only be permanently tied to that machine and motherboard. It is not supposed to be uninstalled and installed on another machine or on an upgraded computer(upgrade meaning significant overhaul like a new motherboard, not something like a graphics card upgrade). You are not supposed to be able to activate it under such circumstances. There is no support from microsoft for an oem license. You should not be able to upgrade to newer OS versions from an oem license. Strictly speaking an individual, in your situation, isn't supposed to be able to buy an oem license, but people do it all the time anyway.

"Any places to save money?"

Switch to linux and openoffice :)

If you aren't overclocking I don't see the need for a 3rd party cooler or the arctic silver. You can stick with the heatsink/fan included with the retail processor.

signmeuptoo94 posted : Oh yeah, one other small thing: I am not too big a fan of Lite On burners. If you can find an NEC, Sony, LG, or Samsung with the features you'd want, I'd sooner go with it. I also am not too big a fan of ASUS burners, FWIW. But when you consider how cheap the burners are, it isn't a big deal, except if it goes out you might not be happy. My experience is lite on burners just don't last.

My NEC 3520a has been serving me for something like, gee, 4 years now, and boy oh boy have I used it!
--
You know your life has gotten "DICEY" when it turns into an episode of LOST, like my ex wife, who I swear is one of "The Others".
snappakazoo posted : This is what I have got so far. I am probably a few weeks from purchase and I appreciate any comments. I don't have the knowledge, time or patience to overclock. I plan to use ReadyBoost with the USB flash drive. I will use my current 2005FPW monitor.

»secure.newegg.com/NewVer ··· 7s+Start

I use the computer for the usual stuff and digital photography. It is replacing a 3+ year old self built computer. I have multiple disks now and plan to re-use my data disks (SATA) but get a new boot disk as you can see--though I may eventually get faster data drives and put the old ones in an external drive. I have two video cards listed, I don't game and therefore, I do not need anything too fancy--I figure the XFX card is more than adequate. I plan on getting Vista 64-bit. And I plan to get Office Pro upgrade...I assume that is ok.

A few questions:
- Case/power supply suggestions? I like a larger case for my clumsy hands.
- Power supply...I will end up with at least 3 or 4 hard drives, do I have enough power?
- I plan to wait for the Q9450 rather than the Q6600
- Any places to save money?
- On the other hand, how about the X38 for the motherboard?
- Did I choose the right version of Vista 64-bit...is the OEM version is the right one?
- How about getting faster memory?

My old build from Nov 2004: »My first home-made computer!

Thanks in advance.
--
Let me 'splain.
