I remember this from Comcast about 6 years ago, you could get 1, and they had them for repair swaps, but if you were looking for a 2nd or 3rd, then sorry....

I remember it quite distinctly, because it had the installers PO'd because Comcast Employees were told that they had to wait at the end of the line, but were given no date as to where the end of the line was.

Every customer order had to be filled before their own employees could get one.

The difference, of course, is that cable companies have 30 million customers that are "gen pop" and FiOS has 1 million tech savvy HD-craving customers. How do you mismanage equipment when you're only worried about 3% of cable customers?

I hope TiVo Inc has been informed and is cranking up production. Let's just hope Motorola doesn't stock out FiOS on Cablecards!

A month and a half of new customers who are driven to TiVo rather than waiting 6 weeks for an inferior rental DVR. Another huge gob of TiVo-owning FiOS customers who will not let FiOS switch to IPTV without a solution for TiVo in place.

The DVR's suck anyway and they are trying to get a new DVR's from Sony. We have been returning a lot of DVRS that don't work. As for the Cable co having no problem with there STB's
they have a lot on hand as we have been taking all there Customers.

Many folks are scrambling to order HD units from Verizon and cableco's. The digital conversion of TV was
the big hook for sales of HDTV's during the holidays. Was this bad planning for the providers? Maybe, maybe not. Are we to blame providers for having a low stock? Maybe. Look at what happened to the Wii.

Whats the deal? Well, someone said (newspapers, the net, FCC flyers, DSLR) analog TV is going away and all those folk that bought HDTV's went to town! Are we going to blame the consumers because they bought so many HDTV's? Hmmmmmm....get my point?

And sorry; the plan to order a HD STB less than a week before Super Bowl is just bad planning, like going into Best Buy on Dec 20 something to pick up a Wii!

Bottom line, there are more and more folks out there breaking in their new LCD's, plasmas, DLP's and HDTV's this time around than last year.

I have Fios TV and don't have an HDTV. I have the basic STB and I can say that the resolution from Fios is tons better than the best effort Brighthouse and DirecTV gave me. Super Bowl will be transmitted on network TV. Don't know what area you are in, but myself and several others (some brands other than Sharp as well) are having problems (not just out of the Philly VHO if you look at the thread referenced later in this post). Up until mid-November my set found all the local digitals in the 70.x to 74.x QAM channel range. Then Verizon turned on PSIP and although I show signal strength, the set is not able to tune the channel. Verizon (and this has been verified by Sharp) admit they are sending non-compliant PSIP data. I have the analysis done by Sharp (never got a clear answer from Verizon until I presented them with this) that details 5 PSIP errors on just a single channel!

Well, if you want to use with FiOS, only if you can get the cable cards! I just brought a TivoHD, but will use it for OTA recording for now.

However, this story of shortages of HD STBs and DVRs could be true. There were a lot of reports of HD STB/DVR shortages for Comcast, Time Warner and other cable companies in January/February the past 2 years. It was really widespread 2 years ago in 2006, IIRC. You combine Xmas sales and the NFL playoffs/Superbowl push for HD TVs and there is a big ramp up in demand for HD services in the December to Superbowl period. By mid to late January, the inventory of new HD boxes may be running low.

You would think Verizon would order enough HD boxes to be prepared so they don't lose customers. But maybe their HD adoption rate forecast was too conservative as HD TVs are selling like hot cakes - even in a economic slow-down. Or Motorola can't build enough HD STBs and DVRs fast enough at the moment to meet the orders from Verizon, Comcast, and other cable companies.

Oh well, one option for those getting a new HD TV is that most of them have a clear QAM tuner. So if you don't run into the PSIP channel mapping problem, you can use the QAM tuner to get the HD local stations until Verizon delivers the HD boxes.
