And the race for HD is moving along. We received in a mail an offer from Dish Network, practically promising the moon and the stars. First off, the packages start at $19.99 with all necessary equipment included. Free installation within 24 hours. 4 rooms for free, with no equipment to buy, and free HD DVR upgrade in all 4 rooms with free HD service.

But, wait, there's more- order now and you will get a free mp3 player or digital camera, or portable GPS, or home thester system or digital picture frame key chain. And you may qualify for a $100 gas voucher. And a one year subscription to TV Guide. And, for a limited time, they are offering 100 channels free plus free HD.

Sounds great untill you try to read the tiny fine print. Even with glasses it's hard, but their appears to be a 36 month commitment with early termination fees. There is an equipment rental fee of $6 for each peice of equipment They want your social security number and numbers from 2 valid credit cards, do do a credit check. Returning Dish customers will recieve a somewhat different offer than new customers. They mention taxes, fees, various other charges. There's lots more but it's very hard to read, maybe just what they want. Dish giveth and the fine print taketh away? If I had a large magnifier handy, I might see more give and take.

Anyway, I'm all for more HD, but I won't go crazy waiting for it, especially with all the other things I have to watch. And, my other interests, including being online, rock n roll, photography, sci-fi, computer art and oil painting. And family. I see the same replies all the time... "There's no HD actual HD content on those channels, just stretch-o-vision", and "Most people don't have HD Sets."

That's rubbish! There is relatively little HD content on ANY HD Channel, including the networks. But the FLAGSHIP shows are typically in HD. How many shows on any particular channel do you actually watch? 1 or 3 tops. So what if 20 hours of the day is not in HD, if the 1 show that I watch on that channel is on HD, then that is all I need. If I were on any other provider right now, including now DISH network I could watch 90% of the shows I watch in HD. But not FIOS.

And just because statistically 'few' people have HD sets, doesn't mean FIOS doesn't need to keep up if they want subscribers that are interested in HD. To use this excuse, is to effectively cater to the lowest-denominator of viewers. Vieweres without HD, or DVRs, or interest in Premium content. If that's what they want, that's what they'll get. Customers who want the cheapest service.

Anyway, I have so much to watch, between all the FIOS channels, Blockbuster, TV on DVD, TV on the internet and DVDs I've made. Man does not live on HD alone.

And, I'm copying the unwatched contents of the HD DVR to DVD, as I may have to get the DVR replaced if the lack of audio problem can't be solved.

So, more HD will come when it comes. As it's been pointed out, most people don't have an HD set. Or, an DVR (HD or not). So, the urgency isn't as great for Verizon to have "more HD" as it would be if more people could watch or record it. Even DISH network with a failed Satellite launch managed to ROLL out SCI-FI HD and USA HD last week.

To answer the guy's question; We don't know exactly when there will be new HD channels, because Verizon won't commit to actually telling us. All we have is a statement they made that said they would "begin" to roll out 30 more HD channels this Spring. As we are well into Spring, we can assume this was a 'guess' on their part.
