I could use 250GB over VPN in a week

Having a cap at at 250GB seems quite low. I can use that much in 2 weeks over VPN when connecting to work from home. Some of our nightly code builds can be over 4GB. And this would not include traffic from Netflix, internet radio, and everyone else in the house using the internet.

Then you (or work) should be paying for your higher usage.

Sounds like you should be using a BUSINESS account then or telling your bosses they need to contribute to your internet bill.

If you have a home to home VPN and get over the cap than you should think about WAN optimization hardware and/or software to reduce the load which a lot of companies do in those cases to reduce the cost.
