my thoughts on a cap

I'm not quite over the fence as far as caps go. I have a bunch of thoughts that come to mind regarding this issue goes.

For one, 250GB is not really all that bad. I would imagine that only a small amount of users(power users) would ever actually get close to that amount of data. So, it wouldn't really affect all that much, mostly just the power users.

But on the flip side, why all this talk about caps when as we progress into the future our connections are suppose to be geared with the abilities to use our connections as we choose, and with the comfortable ability to move into the high-definition age. It just shows me that Comcast is getting greedy, and that the consumer actually has the upper hand on something *gasp*!

And whats the point of raising speeds when they still put a cap on, when the whole point is to be able to download more data quickly. An unintended consequence of this fact is and will be that people will download more than if speeds were slower.

250GB is not a bad or unfair amount of data monthly. Most will never hit that(although nice to not have a cap). But as HD, larger files, online gaming, and "pay to download" services become the norm, we will eventually find that 250GB is a joke. Maybe not now, maybe not soon... but eventually they will be able to hold that over our heads. If we let them do this to us now, it will only get worse, and other companies will learn they can do it too(maybe even more so).

Ultimately, I want to have the ability to download as much as I want. If they can't supply the demand, then don't add more customers just to put money in your pocket! We pay good money, and they should use *some* of that money to cater to increasing supply and capital- rather than buying skyscrapers.

Like it's been stated, 99.9% of customers don't even come close to 250GB/month. It's just going to look bad if they put a cap on their tiers, because majority will(should) feel they are being restricted-- nobody wants to feel restricted, especially paying customers. Comcast should worry about that .1% who are downloading an insane amount of data without regard for the system, other customers, and total bandwidth. Penalize THOSE people, not the 99%!

EDIT: And about overage charges: I hate them. If they do implement this cap, let us know if we getting close and THEN give us the option to exceed for a premium. Doesn't seem right to me that they can cash in on customers have no idea or no way of knowing how much they have downloaded. That's just cheap. Let me know if I'm close to exceeding the cap amount, don't get over on me without giving me the option to continue or stop.

EDIT 2: There is just something about a cap that stinks to me. If we justify and allow Comcast to cap us now, I just feel like it's going to turn into a slippery downward slope and will allow them to cap us further. A part of me thinks that people are using more bandwidth as internet uses increase, and Comcast doesn't want to justify or fork over the money to upgrade or add servers to their network. They should be working on improving/upgrading their infrastructure, rather than going after users(normal, majority) who have high bandwidth needs. They need to address the bandwidth hogs, and them specifically. Rather than retarding the whole network, and it's customers.

if they cap, at least UNCAP the damn speeds! I wouldn't mind unthrottled DOCSIS 3 speeds with a 300 GB cap for ~ $65/month. THAT makes sense. Heavy downloaders will love it, while your average grandma will be fine with it, as long as they keep a second, ~$35/mo. tier that's up to 4-5 Mbits/sec, with a 100 GB cap, for the light users who just want to check e-mail and websurf.
