Re: VPN Red Herring !

But, bottom line. VPN users are using a RESIDENTIAL service for BUSINESS use.

This really comes down to the same mindset as laws preventing using homes for storefront businesses, limiting numbers of trucks you can park in some residental neighborhoods, etc.

Bottom line, people who use thier cable modem for 12-14 hours a day VPN access are going to be the ones that call and complain when service is down with the famous "I need this to get my work done". The rest of us call and complain, but we will deal with a little outage here and there, becuause S%!T happens. VPN users DEMAND a higher level of service, and they should pay for it.

My company understands this, and because if it, they have setup us up so that we can do ALL of our work from home, without needing a VPN. I can get to the Intranet, my Email, and my timesheet system. We have a VPN, but it's only for access to the file servers. In other words, instead of needing VPN access ALL DAY, like with my old company, who had everything behind the VPN, I only need it once or twice a month, for 10-15 minutes.

Bottom line. Internet is NOT a right. They can impose any rules they want, and you have 2 choices. Live with it, or move to something else. If you don't have another option, then live with it, or clam up.

Phone companies base whether you're charged residential or business rates for POTS and ISDN lines on the *LOCATION* where the service is installed, NOT the *USE* of the service. (exception: if you want in the yellow pages or want a very large number of lines you must pay business rates.) Phone companies have tried to change the rules (particularly for BBS's in the '90s) and the state regulators always sided with consumers.

Dialup accounts almost always cost the same regardless of use, too. Why does broadband have to be different?
