As far as I know also, and correct me if I am wrong - I shouldn't have any problems connecting to exchange remotely (so in other words conflicts with mailbox ports apart from 143 for chat which is blocked).
I haven't used xchange server 5.5, but as far as an email sever it worked great. I changed the ports to what ever I wanted and it work seamlessly. Of course I had to make the change with the DNS provider. Unlike HTTP or FTP where everyone needs to know what port your using (unless you have a DNS provider seamlessly forward the port, which I never found). When it came to email, the only one who needed to know what port it was on was the DNS server. Email servers seemed the easiest to work around the port blocking.
I forgot one thing, who ever wants to check/send the mail off your server does need to know what ports your using. If its just you or a few others, then it isn't a big deal.
Oh, one last thing, the email server needs the ability to change ports.
The same goes for HTTP, BUT if you had a SMALL web page you wanted to set up as a HOBBY, and wanted to index online, you would always have that www.whatever.com
