bryank posted : I install Home Theater systems for a living and I actually performed this test for a customer the other day. We ran a set of components cables from the Comcast DCH3416 box viewed HD and then hooked up a HDMI cable. The customer didn't see a difference and while I did see a "slight" difference I used the HDMI for simplicity.

The main reason for me to use HDMI is it carries both audio/video in one simple cable and when you run it through an audio receiver (like I was in this case), there is no need for a digital audio cable (Fiber Optic or Digital Coax) since the HDMI carries it within.

Quality of the HDMI cable does affect sync issues when running through an audio receiver. I have found if I use cheap mono price cables or other low name brand cables, I get HDCP sync issues. If I use a Monster Cable or other reputable manufacturers, those issues never pop up. And this is mainly when we do video switching through an audio receiver. Also, not every audio receiver handles HDCP issue as good as others. I have had outstanding results with the Denon audio receivers (specifically the AVR-2308) handling HDCP, but Yamaha struggles at times (even with a good cable).

In my own personal system, I use component video cables from my DCT6412 box to my Pioneer Elite plasma and I have 100% happy with the results. Eventually at some point I will have to upgrade to HDMI because I believe it will be come the standard in how devices are connected to TV's and composite, s-video, and even component will be obsolete.

However, they do not intentionally disable HDMI ports and do not forbid customers from using the HDMI ports.

Because the policy is that they do not officially support HDMI, getting one is based on luck and cannot necessarily be requested (unlike a customer who can request a DVR box, or a HD box, or a standard box).

The agent you spoke with is clearly misinformed of the advantages of HDMI over components cables.
--
CheckSite.us | YourIP.US

Comcast does not support HDMI ???

chkrdflg posted : Today I called the local Comcast office to check on the status of HD boxes with HDMI output (non DVR). I want to exchange my current box, an SA Explorer 3250 HD for one that has an HDMI output. After the customer service person told me that the expected shipment had not arrived, he went in this rant that HDMI is not what I want "despite what the children at Circuit City tell you". He told me that based on his knowledge and experience component cables offer better performance. He said why try to put all of that data and "current" through a "little wire" (HDMI) when you can send it through 3 bigger wires (component). He said the reason they don't support HDMI is because they don't want service calls due to bad picture quality from HDMI. He also said that the decision is mine and I can use which ever one I like when they arrive. Why would they try to steer people away from HDMI. Comcast's own site links to this site, which extols the benefits of HDMI: »www.hdmi.org/learningcen ··· faq.aspx ,
to learn more about HDMI. Am I missing something here or do they just not want to supply HDMI boxes???
--
Get in, Sit down, Shut up, & Hold on!
