Re: New Firmware for my SB 5100 It is obvious (based on the fact that many of the common modems are recieving different software versions) that it changes/enables/disables something that comcast wants NOW.
Exactly what that is, we don't know, it could be security related, or add/enable some feature to allow for a bandwidth monitor, or faster speeds or ???.
The other thing to know is what once this software is on their servers, usually within 2 weeks they push it to all modems (forced reboot, usually at night/early AM) people that happen to reboot just get it sooner. |

Typically Motorola(and others) have added a suffix letter to equipment locked to/sold exclusivily by a a given provider to identify them/show ownership and keep them from being resold as an open/unlocked version. it would be nice if CC would release version# info, provided it doesn't present a clue to hackers. |

So far assorted tests have shown, that since the update my download speeds (test sites and files) have been slightly less than before, pings slightly higher, all of which may or may not be releated to whatever changes were made. |

I have a DHCP IP address, I didn't need/want static IP's so I convinced the sales rep to let me keep my SB5100, which I own, I do not rent from Comcast. |

The actual speed and capping are controlled by the CMTS, but this might be something to make the modems more compliant/ controlable or less likely to crash/timeout/etc.
I'm still leaning toward a bandwidth monitor |

Mine keeps trying to upgrade but it is a 5100 and they keep trying to give it the 5101 file. Supposedly they are going to find the correct file and send it to my modem within 24 hours.

Got the new SB5101 firmware after doing a manual reboot a few minutes ago. I noticed when doing so that the power light lit up and the receive light flashed for a couple of minutes (the others were dark), then the online/activity lights kicked in while the receive/send lights flashed simultaneously. It then rebooted again a few seconds later and came back up. Good luck. I commented on the same issue over the weekend. They are yet to push the correct config file and appear to have given up. I bought my SB5100 in 2005 and started having issues after I switched back to it from a SB5120. Since then, they continue to swear that everything in their system is fine, but the SB5101 config files get pushed. No Comcast tech appears to be able to fix this issue, and I can't swap out the modem because I own it. |

They tried to send me the SB 5100 Firmware on the 12th, after our connection went down from 3-5 AM (scheduled work I'm sure). It failed, no shocker, I have a SB 5101  2008-09-12 03:09:06 4-Error E107.0 SW upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file 2008-09-12 03:09:03 6-Notice E102.0 SW Download INIT - Via Config file d11_m_sb5100_speedtier_c01.cm They did send me the most current 5101 file a couple of months ago though- Software Version: SB5101-2.6.2.0-SCM00-NOSH For a while, they had been trying to push the 5100 software to my 5101, then it stopped for a while, but it seems to have begun again. |
