[General] SBC/AT&T SSL Server AlertHello:
I want to alert SBC tech support that there is an issue with their SSL servers that their low level support people are not aware of.
Most people are aware of the forklift in moving everyone to new server configurations last year to switch to SSL. last week I began experiencing erratic performance with my e-mail. Spoke at length with tech support yesterday who insisted there was no problems at their end.
Thanks to an attentive listener (thanks SANFAN) on this board, he suggested I switch back to old (non SSL ports) and bingo it works! Why this should be happening I have no clue, but it is unbelievable that tech support would not be aware of issue where their servers are rejecting SSL connections. I want to emphasize all of my settings were by the book, but they refused to take any initiative or responsibility for simply checking on their end.
If I am off base with this conclusion I apologize in advance, but what is a paying customer to do?
Very disappointed with SBC/AT&T support system.

Now that I have switched my servers to non-SSL, I am getting warnings from SBC/Yahoo that I must switch back immediately! I would be happy to if they would only recognize they aren't working (at least for me and at least one other member on this Board - see below).
Worst experience with SBC/AT&T service I've ever had. |

They are working - most likely if you have a router that might be interfering with the encrypted ports or security software that is blocking the outgoing email because it can't scan the encrypted port as well. Could also be the client software itself.
Everytime I come across customers with your problem - I take them into safemode w/networking and it works just fine (pointing to a PC issue) or bypass their router and again it starts working. If I have a customer using Office Outlook, I'll set their account up on their Outlook Express and it works just fine or vice versa.
If there was a problem on our end, then we would be flooded with those calls and we just aren't.
And you will continue to get those warnings as long as you use the old ports. We will be shutting them down eventually (no date yet).
You may consider it bad customer service but we aren't responsible for end user's equipment (PC, Router etc). We do have limits to our FREE Tech Support.
Now the agents you got should have done more to help track down the culprit on your side to show you our servers are working fine.
If all else fails we do have Test PCs setup on DSL lines and we do setup customer accounts to see if we can replicate the problem. |

As Frohike7 said, if this was a widespread problem not only would AT&T be flooded with support calls, but we'd see it here in the forum. This week it's just you and SANFAN. It may very be affecting others, but it doesn't appear to be a big enough problem to blip the radar. I haven't had any problems and neither have any of my clients (and to be sure, I'd hear the screaming!) I'm not quite so sure it's your computer/router/etc as Frohike7 is, simply because it's not all that unusual for the AT&T/Yahoo servers to do weird stuff. Given the number of AT&T/Yahoo email servers, perhaps it's something that's only affecting one of the whole group. There's one thing I do know for sure, and that's if you want to have reliable email that doesn't throw a hissy fit every now and then, you need to move away from the AT&T/Yahoo servers. Unfortunately, Yahoo has control of this stuff and it seems like they don't really care too much about AT&T's customers. |

Frohike,
Thank you for the constructive suggestions (rebooting with safe mode/networking, and direct line to modem bypassing router), but unfortunately they have not solved issue. Specifically, all e-mail sent via SSL port simply hangs. This has been case for several days.
My next steps will be to reinstall client (the only way I know how to do this is to uninstall entire 2003 Office Suite and start over, sigh ....).
Any other suggestions?
In the interest of open discussion I do have to push back on your comment about "FREE" tech support. It is not free; I consider it part of service I pay for which BTW was increased 25% earlier this year.
The error code generated by MS Outlook "0x800CCC7D" specifically advises that it is a server issue and tells user to contact ISP. Given that there has been a fair amount of discussion over the years concerning this error (try Google search) you would expect SBC/AT&T would have more support for users on how to handle it (just as you have suggested).
Again thanks for your participation on this Board and I continue to welcome your advice.
Sincerely, |

I have no idea whether this is security breach or not, but I fairly believe ATT/SBC tech support should be better informed when they receive a customer complaint about this error. |

I know you said you'd been over the settings, but just to be sure, this is what you've got?
POP server = pop.att.yahoo.com. SMTP server = smtp.att.yahoo.com. Checked on the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL). SMTP port = 465. Checked on the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL). POP3 port = 995. Checked on the option labeled Outgoing server requires authentication No other options checked.
Also, your user profile here shows a pacbell.net address, but I'm assuming that you're really a migrated account, right? |

Tonydi:
Roger on all accounts.
Note as soon as I uncheck "use encrypted connection" the port settings revert to old ports and everything works fine (except for Yahoo warnings to discontinue using these old settings).
One other data point: I can receive on the SSL port but I can not send.
And yes, I'm on the sbcglobal.net domain.
Many thanks for your interest and suggestions.

Can you turn on the Outlook logging and then post the log contents when you try and send with SSL on and port set to 465?
To turn on the logging in Outlook 2003....
• In Outlook go to Tools, then Options.
• Click the "Other" tab, then click the "Advanced Options" button.
• Check off the box next to "Enable logging (troubleshooting)" and click Ok until you're back to Outlook.
• Close and restart Outlook
Now try and send an email.
After you've sent a test email, close Outlook and go find the OPMLog.log file and post it. It's located here.....
C:\Documents and Settings\[whatever your PC username is]\Local Settings\Temp\OPMLog.log
Note that you must have Windows set to "Show hidden files and folders" in the Folder Options in order to see that location.
Once we're done with this make sure you go back into Outlook and disable the logging. Otherwise that log continues to grow every time you make a mail run. |

Hello:
I want to alert SBC tech support that there is an issue with their SSL servers that their low level support people are not aware of. I haven't seen any problems with the SSL servers. I poll 'pop.att.yahoo.com:995' using the "Mercury POP3 Distributing Client" in Mercury/32, which is an MTA application. Mercury/32 v4.61 statistical report, Mon Sep 22 14:07:47 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------
MercuryD POP3 Client:
Messages downloaded since startup 97 (75)
Suppressed due to duplicate message ID 0 (0)
Poll cycles since startup 234 (187)
maillogint@pop.att.yahoo.c: retrievals 34 (27)
hard2finda@pop.att.yahoo.c: retrievals 20 (16)
mailloginf@pop.att.yahoo.c: retrievals 30 (21)

sergeantlo@pop.att.yahoo.c: password errors 1 (1)
ssglogin@pop.att.yahoo.c: password errors 1 (1)
maillogine@pop.att.yahoo.c: password errors 1 (1)
That is only five Yahoo! errors in 234 polling cycles. Mercury/32 is set to relay through 'mail.pacbell.net' because 'smtp.att.yahoo.com' is real pissy about sender email addresses matching the account log in UserID. But I do, occasionally, use 'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' in any of: Pegasus Mail 4.41, Opera 9.52, SeaMonkey 1.1.11, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.16, Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606, or MS Outlook Express 6. None have reported that error. I think that Frohike7 may be on the right track. There is a known bug in one of the MS Outlook versions which fails with an SSL connection. |

I am using Outlook sp3. I have posted OPMlog, as well as screen shot of Outlook error report. FYI, I have two e-mail accounts on sbcglobal.net. Both fail when trying to send test messages via smtp port 465. The log may initially capture some activity with settings on non-secure ports before I switched back to SSL. Many, many thanks for all the interest and energy being applied to this request. Sincerely, |

Sometimes you have to remove the unsent msgs from the Outbox if the settings have changed, otherwise Outlook becomes unhappy. It's not pretty when Outlook becomes unhappy. This is weird since it accepts your login when the POP3 side is processing. Have you tried setting up Windows Mail on that computer and see if it works ok? I'm wondering if this is something hosed in your Outlook. What about trying with another computer connected to your DSL? |

Tonydi: Many thanks for reviewing logs. Yes, Houston, I have a problem. I have another client which connects fine to SBC/AT&T SSL ports running OE on XP through same router & modem. I had a horrible experience with Windows Mail when I first migrated to Vista in June. Corrupted and lost many of my imported directories, and could not be cleaned up despite extensive efforts. Refuse to go there. I did receive a query from an MVP on Microsoft Outlook Usenet site asking for more info about the server software at SBC/AT&T He pointed me to an old thread (circa 2004) concerning Outlook 2003 which raises some issues I frankly do not comprehend. Can someone follow the quoted link on attached message and make any sense out of this? Again, many thanks for your interest. |

There ya go - its not AT&T. Like I said in my post above - if another email client works just fine - then its not the AT&T servers. Something going on with the Outlook your using or the PC - thats why the other poster suggested trying Windows Mail - if windows mail works then its definitely with Outlook - if it doesn't work with Windows Mail - then something going on with the PC. Granted the Tech you spoke with should've tried this with you on the phone so we could at least prove our network is working just fine. So he did drop the ball there. But we are not required to fix whatever problem outlook might be experiencing. Its Microsoft Outlook not AT&T Outlook. |

The newsgroup post really isn't addressing your issue. Clearly Outlook is capable of using these SSL ports, it's just something wrong with your end. If you don't want to use Windows Mail, download some other client, perhaps Thunderbird. We just need to see if it's really your copy of Outlook, or something else on your PC. |

Frohike:
The fact that an OE client on another machine in my network can connect to a different SBC account doesn't explain why an Outlook 2003 client can not connect to my account. It simply proves it is not a router or a modem issue. Agreed?
If you look at the thread between the MS staff, posted above, they are asking for information about the server software. It would be nice if someone could answer their question.
I'm just a customer caught in the middle. Can someone at least tell SBC/AT&T not to cut off the old ports. There are a lot of Outlook 2003 users in the field and evidently this problem still pops up (albeit infrequently).
For my part I will spend tomorrow AM doing a complete uninstall and reinstall to see what happens. If anyone cares I will let you know.

Not sure that this is driven by AT&T. They contract with Yahoo!, and these are Yahoo! servers in question. AT&T could presumably pass the suggestion on to Yahoo!; but I don't know if AT&T has any clout. I would hope so. |

Then why not setup the account that isn't working on the XP machine? That way if it doesn't work then you don't have to go through that whole uninstall install process.
My fault for assuming it was the same sbc account. Didn't realize you wouldn't use the same variable in the test. |

The salient difference in the clients is this: 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol Provider' Windows Live Mail uses it, MS Outlook Express does not. And it is right after the logged line referring to the 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol Provider' where the poster in the MSFT help groups shows a failure. I don't understand how the client is built, but it appears that Microsoft has added something, at least to Windows Live Mail, which can become corrupt, and can break an SSL connection. It would be curious to see if MS Outlook is also using this 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol Provider'. P.S. I checked your logs one more time, and nothing about that 'Microsoft Unified Security Protocol Provider', so I am probably barking up the wrong tree on that one. Here is another thread by a poster having trouble with MS Outlook 2003. He just confirmed that he is having trouble with 'smtp.gmail.com:465' and SSL. » groups.google.com/group/ ··· 2000568dEither both Gmail and Yahoo! are using flaky servers (I think that is unlikely), or something else is afoot. I see that AV email scanning has not been brought up. MS email clients (both Outlook Express and Outlook) are notoriously incompatible with AV email scanning. The usual recommendation is to turn it off; if possible, uninstall the AV application and reinstall it without the email scanner component. |

No joy. I uninstalled entire Office Suite, ran MS uninstall tool to make sure there were no left over files or entries, and then reinstalled Suite all the way back to SP3.
I still can not create an authenticated SSL connection to port 465.
Tomorrow I will follow Frohike's suggestion about installing Office 2003 Suite on the XP machine on my network, and see if I can connect. Lets assume I will be successful (I will spare you my reasoning). If so, what does that suggest? Could this be a Vista issue?
For now, I have to keep using unauthenticated SMTP port. Is there anyway to communicate to Yahoo Mail wizards that there is an issue (albeit rare) with their SSL port 465?
Thanks for your interest and support.

See my edited reply to an earlier post; just finished the edit seconds after your post. It appears that one user of MS Outlook 2003 is having a similar problem accessing 'smtp.gmail.com:465' w/SSL. That would tend to suggest a client problem. |

Windows Mail experiencess same error. Based on some of your suggestions, I tried to connect with Windows Mail client. Same error. Can not connect to port 465. Screen shot of client error attached. This is not strictly an Outlook 2003 client issue! |

I'm not talking about installing Office Outlook on XP - I'm talking about creating your accout on the Outlook Express on the XP and seeing if it works.
I'm thinking it's a PC issue now - since you reinstalled Office Outlook and still didn't work. |

This is not strictly an Outlook 2003 client issue! Nor is it strictly a Yahoo! server issue. Windows Live Mail, MS Outlook 2003, Windows Mail, 'smtp.gmail.com:465' w/SSL... Where is the commonality? The only thing standing out is the PC. Do you have an AV application set to scan email? |

NormanS & Frohike
1) Turned off AV and Firewall (running Windows Live One Care). No success. Still can't send via SSL port 465.
2) Established account in OE on XP machine and CAN send via SSL on port 465.
Assuming its strictly a local PC issue, how deep could fault lie? Does Vista itself play a role in setting up connection?
Thanks for your support. |
