Fios modemI just signed up for Fios.
I have a Sonicwall router that I have been using with Cablevision.
I See Verizon provides a router. Is this router a modem too or can I shelve it & just use my sonicwall?
Thanks |

If you are getting TV you will need to use Verizon's router in some form since the guide and VOD are provided over the coax so you need a MoCA bridge. The Verizon router is a router only, not a modem to answer your actual question. You might look at this FAQ (» Verizon FiOS FAQ » What are the tradeoffs between the various router configurations ) if you want to keep your router and are getting FiOS TV. |

Looking at the FAQ, since I am getting a Media Share DVR, looks like I will need to use:
6) cat5 from ONT to user router. LAN port on user router to LAN port on Actiontec per FAQ here: »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 4): LAN-to-LAN keeps MediaShare DVR
Can anyone comment on this setup.
If I need to get support, is It simple to switch back to the Actiontec? I would probably leave my Network in tact behind the Sonicwall & just set up a single laptop back to the Action tec For a support issue.

said by rinconmike:Thanks. I am getting phone & TV too. Definitely read the FAQ about options for various configurations. In order to get the full capability of the STB(s) you will need a MoCA bridge. Phone doesn't care how the router is set up. If you want the option of using your own router as the primary router you need to make sure that the installer configures the ONT for CAT-5 and not MoCA (only one WAN can be active). Then the installer can still do a "standard" installation with the Verizon router using CAT-5 for the WAN and the Actiontec router as the MoCA bridge. The installers generally prefer to do an all coax installation so it is recommended that you already have a CAT-5 run from the ONT point to where the router will be placed (also avoids possibly being charged for installing the CAT-5 line). Good luck and welcome. |

Thanks. I Quickly read through it & will read again in more detail.
I am very familiar with networking with CAT 5, but Some of these other terms, are new to me.
What is: ONT STB coax connection - If one did a coax setup, this would connect to the Verizon provided router? |

ONT == Optical Network Terminal: Converts to the Fibre cable/signal to ethernet cable/singal and/or COAX 2.) STB == Set-Top-Box: DVR/Digital Box 3.) Correct, and to each STB |

Coax has to go to the Verizon router even if you do an Ethernet connection to it. It provides VOD and text.

I read through the FAQ, in short it looks like the Actiontec is another box on the LAN - correct?
Where the Owner Supplied router (my sonicwall in my case)is 192.168.1.1 and the Actiontec is assigned a static of 192.168.1.2. DHCP is turned off on the Actiontec and it only feed the STBs. Correct?
So for just internet, it is jus about plug and play with regard to plugging the owner supllied router in the ONT, similiar to plugging it into a cable modem?
Thanks,
Mike |

when setting up the new router, is the Fios a PPOE or DHCP? With my cable modem, I have the sonicwall set as DHCP and it pulls an IP from the WAN Gateway.
thanks |

With very rare exception (early COs), all new installs are DHCP.
edit: It is very important when switching from the Actiontec to your own router to properly release the DHCP address from the Actiontec before moving the WAN connection to your router. This is covered in the FAQ. |
