AVG & Spyware Doctor updates stall

For the past couple of months I have been unable to update either Spyware Doctor or AVG through my Metrocast connection. My alternate ISP (kaballero) works fine with the same machines and routers. I have tried the DI-604 and WGR614 routers with firewall disabled.

In every instance the update starts but quickly stalls after about 50 to 200K. I have tried at every time of day and night with always the same results.

Generally the Metrocast connection is fast on downloads, sometimes surpassing 700KB/s, and it has been pretty reliable.

Any clues? Does Metrocast run some kind of traffic shaping that might cause this? Maybe it is just my local office. They were originally 1st Commonwealth Cablevision before they were bought by Metrocast about 6 or 8 months ago.

Never had trouble updating either. If you are running a 3rd party firewall (Zonealarm, etc.) that could be the problem--if you haven't already, put both of those programs in your firewall's "safe programs".

If that doesn't work, I have heard that the new AVG antivirus can have conflict problems with Spyware Doctor and especially Threatfire. I would suggest uninstalling Spyware Doctor and rebooting to see if that solves the problem of updating AVG.
