Re: Motorola 2210-02-1002 / 2210-02-1006 modem is junk!

If they sent you a newer one that is supposed to work better then I don't guess it would not hurt to give it a honest chance. Truth be told I actually like the Motorola 2210-02-1006 modem. Mine is working just fine and I have had no troubles out of it. I modified it by cutting out the recessed Motorola logo on the top to let the heat out. This modification would void the warranty, but I don't care.

My Motorola 2210-02-1006 is serial number 3672xxxx. Mine has a Texas Instruments AR7 chip (TNETD7100ZDW).
.

It will work just fine as a "Bridge" modem. »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »Bridge Mode for the 2Wire 2701HG-B

I have installed several of the 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateways for my customers and they have ran great, have great DSL statistics, and the customers are happy with them.

My solution was a bit less drastic. I "mount" them on an open wire-frame rack, along with the rest of my routers, switches, etc. In that environment (with 99.99% unrestricted airflow), mine are only slightly warm to the touch. My serial numbers are 47xxxxxx and 48xxxxxx which may also contribute to the lack of EASY-BAKE® Oven temperatures.

I had AT&T send me a modem a week ago because they never had when I swithced to AT&T and I was still using my 3341-ELK (earthlink) Netopia. I guess I should keep the 3341 around as a spare in case my new 2210 cooks itself in a year....

That sounds like a good plan to me.

I looked at your other thread and see that your modem's serial number is 49xxxxxx. Sounds like that is one with a newer chip in it. People say the one with the newer chip is better.

Or you can just replace them with a used Westell or Netopia.

They still work great.

I didn't like the 2-Wire Wireless version offering from ATT.

I stick with the latter.

If you don't want a modem/router combo unit, any of the later SBC issued SpeedStream modems (5100b "five-light", 4100, or 4100b) should work, as well. The default setup is kind of weird, because it can run a PPPoE session, but all can be bridged easily enough. I believe only the SpeedStream 4100b is supported for use with ADSL2+, though.
