cat5 refers category 5 ethernet cable.

The Actiontec router supports two connection types to the ONT: coax and cat5. The discussions you see here regarding switching from coax to cat5 are for users that want to run their own router because they have issues with the Actiontec. However, whether you are connected coax or cat5 to the ONT does not affect your WAN speed.

Not sure what you mean by "a wireless PC work off of my mac".

Do you mean your iMAC uses a wireless connection to the Actiontec (not a wired connection)?

First off, you need to determine if your slow speeds are due to your wireless connection, or something else. So it is always best to test with a wired connection first.
•Connect your iMAC directly to the router using an ethernet cable.
•Turn off the wireless on the iMAC.
•Did you run the optimizer that birdfeedr posted above? Because of the higher speeds and low error rates associated with fiber, a large RWIN value is needed to maximize throughput.
•Try this speed test site and select a server near you:
»myspeed.visualware.com/

If you get your rated download/upload speeds, then everything is working fine using a wired connection and you have a wireless issue affecting your speeds. Try what I posted here, then post back and let us know your results.

More Fiber-

I connected my iMac directly using a ethernet cable.
Turned off the wireless connection.
Running the MacOS Optimzer and OS 10.56 Leopard.

Speed test site results:
Download- 3.41 Mbps
Upload- 4.54

Hope this help....

OK thanks. That rules out a wireless problem.
I'm assuming you don't have more than one computer you can test with?

On other thing to try: Reboot the ONT.
•Disconnect the AC from the ONT.
•Remove one of the leads from the battery in the Battery backup Unit (BBU).
•Leave it off for at least 2 minutes
•Reconnect battery lead.
•Reconnect AC power
•Reboot the Actiontec router.

Other than that, you need to call the FSC for help.
It seems to be an upstream problem, that they will need to deal with.
