Re: Looking for a new VoIP provider

VOIPo looks real good right now. But it is a newcomer, I believe, and there's very little information offered on the company's web site about the company. That makes me a bit hesitant to switch to them.
I don't choose to use VOIPo because I prefer BYOD over DISCO and because I like my ATA's behind the router.

Having said that, I think that it's a fine choice for BYOD users.

But I am somewhat astonished by your statements.

This company has literally been the subject of several hundred posts in this forum over the past year or so, including an accelerating pace recently.

There are several dozen recent reviews posted.

For heaven's sake, the CEO of the company personally makes and responds to several posts every day. He has posted numerous long, long detailed posts about various technical problems that have come up, as the company went into public launch.

There is an enormous presence of this company in this forum. Everyone who reads the forum, and the Voip reviews, has been following the creation and evolution of this company.

I cannot think of ANY Voip provider of any size that has been more open and upfront. Not even close.

Yes, their website could use some more sprucing up. But that's not where the action is. It is impossible to be a regular reader of this forum and not know an enormous amount about VOIPo---and its CEO/owner.
Are you kidding me? If tomorrow the CEO decides to retire and the company goes to hell, who's going to pay for time and money it takes me to switch to another provider? There's nothing amazing or unusual about my desire to know more about the company and their business plan before switching to them, my astonished friend.

I never understood this argument. If you're looking for a massive company just stay with AT&T.

If the money you save by going VoIP is not worth your time, then again - just stay on POTS.

VOIPo has been more open and upfront about the principals and intentions and business plans and strategies than virtually any other provider discussed here. Do a search on posts from VOIPOTIM especially the early ones, and read through the threads. »/postl ··· thin&p=1 You'll find enough info to write a business school case (other than financial results) on launching a telecom company. The lack of comparable info from all other providers will be what will likely astonish you.

That said, you still have to go through the regular drill about whether any particular carrier is right for you: Can they port your number and provide E911 in your area, do you need caller ID name and number in both directions, do you need your number to be listed in directories, do they have all the calling features you need, are the international rates acceptable, etc.

I agree with you on that.

Here's why I was so nonplussed by your original post:

These are the current top companies in the GBU list on this website, excluding cable companies or cellphone companies:

CallCentric, FutureNine, VOIPo, PhonePower, VoicePulse, QuantumVoice, Voip.MS

Now, of ALL those companies, I'd say there's more known about VOIPo than just about anybody else.

-------------------------------------------

Yes, those companies are pretty much privately owned.

So if you prefer a big public company listed on a stock exchange, you can go with:

-Verizon VoiceWing (oops, they are abandoning the service).

-ATT CallVantage (oops, no new customers, and may be shutting down this month).

-VoiceStick (owned by i2Telecom)(oops, poorly rated by many people, and the company kicked out the best guy they had).

-ViaTalk (owned by HostRocket, a well established, multi-million dollar web hosting company) (oops, poorly rated by many people, many have left to go elsewhere).

-Vonage (the Sears of Voip, and that's not a compliment).

-----------------------------------------

Happy Voiping

I agree pretty much with what you said, but (there is always a 'but'):

Of course we all know that ViaTalk is not a big public company. They are privately held as you stated, but had included them in you discussion about big public companies listed on the exchanges.

They used to be the 'Bell of the ball' about 3 years ago for some of the same reasons that VoIPO is popular now. While many people did experience issues, many have not. Unless my experience changes, I will be signing up for another year in a couple of months.

It sort of looks like I am running their flag up the pole. Not really what I intended to do here, just suggesting the right grouping for VT, which is sort of a 'non of the above'.

Points taken. Thanks. But I hope that I am doing a pretty decent job for what they are paying me!

I refrain from commenting about Packet8 because some folks love them, some hate them, there seems to be no middle ground. It's hard to get a handle on it. Just like the numeral "8" which is plump on top, plump on bottom, but comes to a point in the middle.

Yes, Lingo is owned by a much larger company, Primus, and the Lingo Voip service does seem to have fallen out of favor.

But regarding VoiceWing's underlying provider, which as you know is deltathree, not to be confused with Level3:

Here in suburban NJ, a small house costs 400,000 and a medium house costs 600,000.

deltathree was just bought by another company for $ 1.2 million. While that was a lot in the old days, it's just the cost of 2 or 3 houses these days (or just ONE bigger house).

As you said deltathree is the provider for Verizon's VoiceWing (soon to be Kevorkianized) and for iconnecthere. But being that the company is worth only 2 or 3 houses, I don't think it's eligible to be included in a discussion of bigger Voip companies.

I'm not w/Vonage, but will say they were my most reliable provider. I picked up the phone and it worked.
