IDE controller card?So for reasons I'd rather not go into (yeah, I'm a Putz) I need an IDE controller card. I am not running raid, but need to run with more than one drive and a DVD burner. I have a Promise Ultratx100, but it's not seen in Ubuntu, Is there a CHEAP ( under $50 or so, I'm not working) card that's compatible with Ubuntu? |

I've got this one (or an older version of it) that does function fine whenever I need to fire up Knoppix, which is the extent of my Linux use. |

two reviewers seem to think so.. » www.newegg.com/Product/P ··· s=ubuntuif it doesn't work you could always return it.. (if you do need to, use the online chat and be creative with the rep.. I generally get a return for refund with no restock fee AND they send me a pre-paid shipping label) |

Thanks, I swear I read all the reviews and didn't see Ubuntu mentioned. I knew it was time to go to sleep before I made any MORE major boo-boos......
What I've done in the mean time is copy my MP3s and my pics to an 8GB falsh drive and switched my drive 1 with my drive 3 so I at least can DO stuff....
It's only temp till I decide whether I REALLY have the money to spend on one right now. (I"m having a problem with my UI money)..... |

An Ultra TX 100 not seen in Ubuntu? That's strange, it's been in the upstream Kernel........since forever. PROMISE PDC202{46|62|65|67} support (BLK_DEV_PDC202XX_OLD)
Promise Ultra33 or PDC20246
Promise Ultra66 or PDC20262
Promise Ultra100 or PDC20265/PDC20267/PDC20268
For libata Older Promise PATA controller support (PATA_PDC_OLD)
This option enables support for the Promise 20246, 20262, 20263,
20265 and 20267 adapters.
Libata doesn't seem to support the PDC20268 which is a TX2. You can find out which chipset your card is using with lspci -v. If it's a 20268, file a bug. The kernel module is available, it just isn't compiled by default. If you're having issue with ATAPI (Optical drives), you may need to pass libata.atapi_enabled=1 at the boot prompt, or append to your LILO/Grub list. My promise TX 100 was working fine with 2.6.24.x pure upstream kernel. But I've moved everything over to SATA since then. |

I can't compile to save my life ( I had thought about two weeks ago that maybe it's time I learn. this is still cheaper though.) You know us baby boomers' answer to everything.... Throw money at the problem and it goes away...... I'm LAZY......... I'll be about 10 miles from Microcenter in about an hour. maybe I'll stop in there to see what they have. Instant gratification is also the word of the day week, Year my life |

I've got one plugged in that has a Sil Image 0680 chipset. There is a discrepancy between disk enumeration by BIOS and by GRUB. In my case, BIOS calls hdx on the RAIDbus card 'hd0', AND BIOS calls this disk a SCSI device. GRUB calls the disk on the RAIDbus card hd2. said by buccaneere;3491824 : It might not be an enumeration difference. It is a fault in code.
I just updated SuSE GRUB last night, fresh install 1st update for 11.1.
Today when I booted it up, it would not boot. The update did a disk enumeration check, which included GRUB, and it changed the menu entry from hd(correct),x, to hd(incorrect),x.
I changed it back, and no problem. It also added an entry for failsafe 11.1, and gave it the wrong hd#.
All 3 Linux'es on this PCI Raidbus disk, when installed, read disk configuration incorrectly. There is no code for checking enumeration when a PCI Raidbus card is installed.
To really throw in convolution, my Raidbus card has only one disk. The card can handle 4 disks - primary master and slave, and secondary master and slave.
BIOS WILL boot from my ODD's first, since they are first boot device. They are both on ONBOARD IDE primary master and slave. BUT, set BIOS second boot device as hd0, and what boots? NOT the ONBOARD IDE secondary master, but the the RAIDbus card!!!
Why does BIOS boot device 'read' jump from ONBOARD, to PCI RAIDbus card?
AND, what if there are MULTIPLE disks on the RAIDbus card, in the RAIDbus' card primary/secondary master/slave configuration?????
