Removing WinPoET tray icon

I've noticed that some people dislike having more icons on their tray after installing new software. Well, I found a way where you can remove the WinPoET icon by going into the registry. After opening it up, click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, iVasion, WinPoet, WinPPPoverEthernet. Then double click on ShowSysTrayIcon and for the value, input No. Restart and viola! the icon is removed and you're still able to connect using WinPoET by clicking the shortcut on your desktop. Hope this helps some people. Sorry if this offends anyone since it's not posted in the WinPoET forum, but the EL/MS forum users might find this helpful. No harm intended.

YOU NEED THE WINPOET TRAY ICON! Don't delete if you delete it you can't connect to the internet. Yes it is annoying. I tried to delete mine finding out that it is what is needed to connect to MS. I just bought a linksys router it is great for PPPoE!

Not really. As long as the WinPPPoverEthernet.exe file is in your startup (you can find this by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools, and System Configuration Utility -- then click on startup to see what programs are in there.), you're fine. I've gotten rid of my icon and I'm still able to connect without a problem. I also put the WinPoET dialer in my startup folder as well whenever my computer is turned on so that I don't have to click the shortcut every time.

BTW, this works for Win 98 SE. I'm not sure if it works for other OS as well...since it is my OS of choice right now.

finally someone that can take that little wave from the system tray i hate it thanks so much and thanks to all the posts from people who had the net freezing problem all i had to do was go to start menu > settings > control panel > network > tcp/ip 'my network card' > properties > ip address > specify ip address 20.1.1.0 > sebnet mask 255.255.255.0 . and its done no more browser freezing the reason why it was freezing is because it would keep seraching for another ip address so if u specify that one it wont look for others anymore you will still have a dynamic ip for surfing the web and things but your network card wont go searching for one thanks everyone for all your help all this info will make my dsl more reliable at surfing and downloading and itll be a little more customizable thanks again!

NO, YOU DO NOT NEED THE ICON. Sorry for yelling but you are dead wrong. SigEP knows his s**t. I have been successfully Winpoet'ing along without the lame icon for weeks now, after following the SigEp program for icon removal. If you like extra icons, then leave it in the tray. I like the cleanest possible desktop and did not want the wave. And just for being a nice guy and sharing he gets another thumb.
Cheers

Wow! I was surprised to see this resurrected last night when illusion172 had brought it up. Thanks for the kind words again. If you think this post was helpful, you can vote it up and they'll archive it for later use so that people can find answers to questions easily. They're doing this in every forum now. I'm not sure if you were aware of this new idea that the creator or moderator(s) came up with.

I hope you're happy with your current PPPoE connection. If you ever need help setting up RASPPPOE again, just IM me.

Yes I know about the new archiving procedures and voted this thread up, now twice. Good info should not be lost! So far so good with Winpoet. I'll likely give raspppoe another go when something goes wrong, but since it's not yet broken....
Cheers.

When you say "net feezing", do you mean that explorer stalls for a few seconds after loading?

Hey Allstar so you mean to tell me if you buy a router you don't need WinPoet anymore? If so, why is that? My brother in law once his PC hooked up to the DSL and I was planning to get a Linksys BEFS41 I think that's it. I can't remember.

The router acts as a PPPoE client, and therefore removes the need for the software on your computer, but your computer doesn't directly get a public IP anymore, so some applications may not work properly.

Re: WinIPcfg solves PPPoET freeze problem

I have Verizon ADSL. Their suggestion to enter dummy IP & Subnet Mask addresses did not solve the DHCP delay problem.
I did the following:
Select Run from the Start menu. Enter "winipcfg".
Enter the IP and Subnet Mask addresses that are reported in the TCP/IP Properties for your ethernet adapter card.
That's it!
If you ever have problems logging on or experience DHCP delays again, run WinIPcfg again to see if the addresses have changed.

You don't NEED WinPoet at all!! Why not just use RASPPPoE?

I don't think you need the icon. Why? I have never seen it on my tray and I am running the Earthlink software without any modifications. The only thing I have on my tray is the icon of the two linked monitors which shows modem activity.
