[OT] RIP: Bellboy, Mac Specialist (2004-2009)

As yesterday was my last day I can now openly admit that I was an Apple employee for the last five years. A couple of people here knew this, but I kept it quiet since I didn't want any attention from Apple--perhaps it's not a secret here at all. It was a fun time and I'll miss it, but it's time to move on to other things.

I've done some cool stuff during my time at Apple:
--wondered around the Cupertino campus like a star struck fanboy
--stood face to face with Teh Steve and actually talked to him without getting fired
--worked four Macworlds and got to demo the new goodies at a few
--worked three keynotes--including the iPhone launch

...and of course I was allowed to participate in one of the best run retail operations in the world selling some amazing products.

Now I just need to figure out what I'll do with the gazillions of t-shirts I've acquired over the years.

BellBoy isn't dead, he no longer works for Apple.

How did he post from the grave? New iPhone app?

I just saw your location and thought man if you worked the Pasadena store you possibly got stuck dealing some of the random repairs I had to take in at work. Including having to bring in computers and iPhones registered to my bosses daughters.

Definately left on my own. However a lot friends were fired lately for some, shall we say, more strict policies that they have recently implemented. Apple retail has changed since I joined them—not necessarily for the better—some might say because of the iPhone.

Yeah I was just reading the other day how strict the company is with its employees. I'd never be able to work under such conditions. I am lucky to work in a very relaxed environment.

Well it wasn't a gulag or anything like that...it just used to be more Steve/Zen-like. Guess that's the best way to describe it...now it's more like an actual business.

Not as much fun anymore...I actually took the job part time to blow off steam from my full time job. It was blast to come to work and talk about Macs and helping people with their problems. But like I said, things change...guess that's what happens when more Windows users cross over to the "dark side" (when they should have stayed put).

Nah...didn't teach any of the kids camps (they were fun to watch though)...but I used to teach the Getting Started workshops (as well all of the workshops we used to offer) in the theater. That was great.

The NYTimes article? I'd read that one, and I've read worse. It was a mac-zine somewhere. Confessions of an ex-Apple employee or something. Brutal policies, and no privacy whatsoever.

Not that it means much, but the topic misled me thinking someone died.

I would change it not to confuse everyone.

Just my $0.02

That's why I put in the date...but it wouldn't be the first time that I've been called a 5-year old.

Interesting stuff Bell! The couple of times I've been out to the campus (strictly as a tourist) I felt the same way. I always thought that would be a cool place to work in another life.

Did Bellboy change the topic title already? 2004-2009 would mean becoming a Mac Specialist and dying all within 5 years of life, shouldn't the intention of the title be obvious?

Brutal politics and no privacy? Sounds like most companies to me. Nothing new here.

I was such a talented child. What a waste!

No biggie...I've zipped through reading titles before...happens to the best of us.

Close - Brutal policies and no privacy. There's a matter of degree too.
If you read some of the articles it's more like working for MI-5 than a computer company.

What is Teh Steve like in person? Is he an asshole or a genuinely nice guy? If you have an extra shirt I will take one. I lost the only Apple shirt I had.

He was nice but kinda curt...it was in public at Macworld...if it would have been in private or on campus he might have stabbed me (and taken my liver) or just fired me.
