HomeRun wire?

Ordered my Seicor splitter and should have it in about a week. I want to prewire the homerun but not sure what wire I should use? For the best connection should I use Cat5 cable? Is this the same as the multiwire Cat5 cable I'm use for my Lan? Or is there another type of wire/cable I should use?

Thanks....Phochief

p.s. getting about 1250 downstream and 190 up.

Solid conductor 24 gauge CAT3 or 5 will work fine look for wire rated CL2.

Splitpair...thanks for the reply....I'm not tremendously cable savvy....is the cable you mentioned just normal Cat5 ethernet cable or something different? Does all Cat5 cable have the same number of conductors inside?

I don't know if the rolls that Home Depot sells has that CL2 rating, but they do have CAT5 in 50', 100', and 500' packages.
I believe it is made by Belkin.
That's what I used on my home run.

So, you just picked a pair of wires inside the cable to hook up to the splitter for the DSL line, right? Do they make a Cat5 cable with just two wires? I guess I'm confused about the difference between a "twisted pair" and Cat5 cable used for networking.

No, CAT5 has 4 pairs within it, thats the only way it comes.
It does not matter which color you use, but I would follow Splitpair's advice in his "Installing a Home Run" FAQ here:

It is my understanding that any cat 5 that is rated for 1 meg or higher data comm. will also be cl 2 rated.

Hope this helps

thanks for the info.....I picked up a 100' roll of cat5e rated at 1000-Mbits. Spent about an hour up in the attic running the stuff from one end of the house to the other. I'm ready to install the splitter when it arrives.

Another question....will running the splitter/homerun potentially offer an increase in speed? Currently, I'm using 6 minifilters which I understand adds an additional 700' for each filter. I'm getting about 1250/185 right now on a Bellsouth 1500/256 line at approximiately 6900' from the CO.

The speed you are getting now is very good. 80% to 85% of advertised is about the best you can get due to overhead fo the protocol. Your download is 85% of 1472 (actual max) so I don't think you will get any more speed.

As the others say, your current speeds are pretty darn good. Installing the splitter and homerun will get you lined up for the best you can get and also help protect you from interference from various sources that could slow you down. You never know when someone is going to plug in something to a jack in your house that could slow you down.
