Re: Microsoft has come full circle with Internet Explorer

said by Ctrl Alt Del:

I applaud Microsoft for making IE8 a very good browser, much more secure and feature rich than older versions. But its support for the very thing it was designed for, rendering a web page, is one of the worst.
I'm another user who's never had any issues with IE. I keep the latest Firefox installed, but I only use it occasionally when a web site is acting strange and I want to eliminate IE as the problem.

I'd appreciate a link or two to web pages where IE8 does a poor job rendering. I'd like to see what you're talking about.

The poor rendering is typically not noticeable on larger sites because they have the resources to fix IE8 bugs and Microsoft includes compatibility enhancement for IE8 and their site. (It's my understanding that if you don't see the compatibility button, it's because MS includes fixes especially for that site.)

That said, I seem to notice the most problems when a website requires a submit, like a login box. After submitting the info, very often I'm presented with a blank page or a horrendously broken render of the post-login page and I have to hit the "compatibility view" button for it to work. I honestly don't use IE8 enough to provide you any sites, I just know the few times I've used it throughout the course of my browsing day I've run into this issue quite a bit.

Here is a good MSDN read on why IE8 can horribly break things: »msdn.microsoft.com/en-us ··· %29.aspx

Well, I don't recall ever seeing those kind of problems. Maybe Ctl-Alt-Del has an example or two. Or, if you stumble on one you can forward in the future, I'd still be interested.

edit: I'm familiar with Compatiblity mode, but I've never had to use it. I see the icon to turn it on but haven't found it necessary. At least not yet.

Sure. I'll see if I can dig it up today. It had to be a site I visit at least once a day or so, because I tend to visit the same core sites each day. I vary rarely venture out into the nether regions and much less often register and/or log into one of those sites.

It's completely possible you're not seeing any issues because you visit sites that are big enough to have been fixed by Microsoft or by the site's developers.

You're not going to see a major website that doesn't render in IE, that would be detrimental to the website owner not being able to display in the most used web browser. The major websites use conditional code and logic to present an IE friendly version of their webpage. There's the web standard version that all other web browsers display, and then there's the IE version for IE. It's stupid and annoying.

Even still, the Compatibility Mode in IE8 gives you good insight to the thousands of websites that used quirks and hacks to display properly in IE7 and/or IE8. Here's a small list of big name websites that used to (or still does) use hacks to get their website to work in IE:
* msn.com.cn
* microsoft.com
* yahoo.com
* ebay.com
* facebook.com
* apple.com
* flickr.com
* dell.com

The reason IE8 hasn't broken any webpages for you lately is because the webmasters have been dealing with IE's issues for you.
