Every Wednesday during the summer the Burlington Lions Club sponsors a classic car show at Mapleview Mall. Weather hasn't been great so far this year, but it was beautiful yesterday, and the place was packed.

First time I've seen a Ford GT and Cadillac XLR in person, and the tricked out Mustang GT was sweet.

Hey some of us have no choice but to drive slushboxes mate

I'll be hitting up Mapleview with the Fusion again when I'm on vacation in Sept to close out the season and the car will look even more different than it does now

Too complicated for me to get the car cleaned up after work in Mississauga and to get there for 6pm.

Son had one of those Cadillac XLRs for a couple days and we couldn't figure out how to get the top off.

Imagine what that custom shit on the Mustang cost.

You may want to check out the Hopedale Mall (3rd Line & Rebecca) in Oakville.

Every Tuesday evening there is a Car Show also.

Some of the exotic supercars only come in automatics with paddle shifters... Most turbocharged cars work better with an automatic and it's one of the reasons why Buick Grand Nationals were mostly autos (could you even buy a manual tranny with a Grand National)...

But that said .... I do enjoy the Muncie M21 4 manual speed in my '60 Vette... Although a 700R4 auto would make pulling away from some of the stop signs on Halifax's San Francisco type hills easier....

Donway Ford has/had a Fort GT. They used to keep it in the showroom if the owner was not out with it. They had many offers to buy it, but would not sell.

One of the guys I used to play hockey with owned a Ford GT...Of course it helped to be part owner of one of the largest Ford dealerships in Halifax-Dartmouth.... I stopped playing hockey a few years back when I turned 51... But I hear he still has the GT...

OMG! I want a Ford GT - the white w/ blue looks better the the chrome version Ford showcased at the NAIAS a few years back.

(I would settle for the beetle, but not in rust orange copper)

I hear the Ford GT is a shitty car, production wise.

All supercars now have automatic gear boxes. But they are not the same as the auto you are going to find on a Mustang or any other normal production car.

Yeah, they're technically standard transmissions with some sort of computer-controlled clutch that allows for automatic as well as manual shifting without needing to press a clutch pedal. You can find transmissions like this on normal production cars too, especially VWs.

Or you could do what my friend did with his classic Dodge Charger which had an auto tranny... Install a B&M shift kit... LOL...

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, it's a 59 Caddy. No other car had fins like that.

yes, several manufacturers are starting to bring out their new style transmissions...they blend the manual and automatic together...it is a dual clutch designed, but is electronically controlled...there is no torque converter, and it is not a hydraulic transmission...it is essentially a manual transmission, but is controlled electronically...with two clutches, the next gear is already engaged, so when it "shifts" it simply releases the clutch in the gear you were in...this provides very quick shifts (to improve performance) and you don't suffer the loss that you get with automatic transmissions...VW uses it and calls it the DSG, Porsche calls it the PDK and i think Mercedes calls it SMG or something like that...Mitsubishi also has one in their EVO series of Lancers.

Or a Cheetah full manual valve body, reverse pattern no 1st gear braking and 4500 stall converter.

Wears out my linkage though.

Yeah the VW DSG (Dual Sequential Gearbox) is exactly what I was thinking of. They work well, and can do next to instantaneous shifts when going from one gear to the next. VW also designed theirs to be able to do a double downshift. The drawback is that unless you're doing sequential shifting (or a double downshift) it takes an EXTREMELY long time to shift. I've heard that it takes several seconds for these transmissions to switch from a forward gear to reverse and back again.

according to my quick internet search, the shifting only takes 8 milliseconds. Which is damn fast.

that is because it is technically already in the next gear...for example, if you are shifting from 2nd to 3rd and are currently in second gear, 3rd gear is already "engaged", but the clutch for 2nd is the one currently "active"...when you shift to 3rd, it simply releases the clutch for 2nd and engages the one for 3rd.

Right, but it takes 1100ms to shift between gears on the same clutch. You can do 1->2->3->4->5->6 quickly, and even do 6->3 fairly quick as they're on separate clutches, but to go from 6->4 takes forever.

Probably not that big of a deal. The computer probably knows to do 6->3->4 in quick succession if needed or something like that.

close, it is Direct Shift Gearbox (in English, but the German words also spell DSG).

Porsche's PDK is also similar, but the English words don't work very well.

Yeah I realized that after I posted. Dual Sequential Gearbox is still a perfectly valid description, though.

that is because of how they are made...it is something like 1,3,5 on one side and 2, 4, 6, R on the other...by going up in sequence, it zips from side to side (engagement), but when doing a double shift, both gears on on the same side of the transmission which is what probably causes the problem.

also, i forgot to mention that Nissan has it in their GT-R, although it hasn't been as reliable as the German versions.

Yeah. You get 8ms shifting when doing proper sequential shifting that the computer thinks is going to happen, such as normal acceleration. It just lifts the clutch from one and engages it on the other. You get 500ms shifting when jumping from gears on different clutches. It's 1100ms when you need to change gears on the same clutch.

My friend's car again, but at the show
These shots are from a show in Cloverdale, BC back in June 2007. The first and last shots are my friend's car. I think it's a '57 Sedan Delivery, but I'd have to ask him to be sure. The pinstriping on it was done by someone famous, but I don't know his name. He's based out of the Seattle area and was a student of a more famous pinstriper (maybe VonDutch, or something like that).

bah, where are the 20" rims, fart pipe exhaust, 2 foot spoiler and "Type R" sticker that all add up to F1 performance?
