Combine that with the fact that probably 99 out of a hundred people couldn't tell you what link they clicked on that TRIGGERED the event to start with (due to the ensuing problems and just trying to get the whole process shut DOWN) if their life depended on it and you'll understand what a problem I've been having getting 'trigger' links.

All I can say is that (without further links supplied) I've done about all I CAN do with this - and I gave it my best shot. If anyone would have told me prior to this test that one day I would drop all my defenses even on a SPARE computer, I'd have laughed in their face.

I can see where it's sometimes necessary (especially for a program as potentially useful as SPG) - but it sure isn't COMFORTABLE.

I'd also like to let everyone know (if you haven't already heard) that Paul Kurland (SpyBlocker) is putting the finishing touches on SettingSentry and we'll be in-house beta-testing it shortly.

Not only will SettingSentry guard your homepage setting - absolutely guaranteed - it will ALSO lock and prevent ANY tampering with your browser settings in IE NS and Opera. Price will be set somewhere between $10 and $20 (US), depending on when/where you get it. (It will also have a complete logfile feature. You'll be able to hide alerts, set an audio warning or simply use it in automatic mode - and the whole thing will be under 100K).

Watch for it.
spy1$ posted : rd - I understand.
rdwilson posted : Readers please be aware that one of the links on the wilders.org thread now contains what appears to be a child pornography site. There are federal and state statutes that prohibit this activity. Please be careful. The site has been reported to authorities.

Here are instructions on how to manually edit the "register" and repair any hijacked homepages courtesy of the porn promoters. This is a cut 'n paste with no edits my me.
-----------
1. Start regedit (Start > Run > Regedit.exe)
2. Go to the following section in your register: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
3. Find the following string there and delete it: C:\windows\regedit.exe/s C:\windows\system32\radB42B9.tmp
radB42B9.tmp can be any file that shouldn't be there, it may also be located at any other directory. This section in your register HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run serves as Autostart group, so you may remove everything unnecessary from there. You may also try to find any other references in your register to the file you found in the section CurrentVersion\Run (eg. radB42B9.tmp)and delete them.
4. Change your default home page (Tools> Internet Options> Home page)to the one you desire and ENJOY!
5.
WE Sim posted : Hi everybody!

The developer for SPG just posted his reply at wilders.org forums --> other security topics, after a thorough review by the mod there. Here's the reply:

Hi,

first of all I would like to thank you for very thorough and informative review. Please find below come correlative data that may shed some light on definition and purpose
of StartPage Guard.

The background: originally SPG was written for my own convenience. When I started receiving alarming calls from my clients that "something" hijacked their start page
I put up a quick-hack to put the user back in control, and save me a trip. Later when I've seen more and more desperate posts on various n/g on the same subject I decided
to let it go public. Well, actually I have considered this project as already closed.

But as I have learned from user's feedback about sexhound and mycpword - I decided to take a quick look. This resulted in SPG version 1.2 (I'd suggest to try this one).

Now I have just learned from your very thorough review that there is a bunch of other creatures I wasn't aware of. I have no time for it, but for sure it would be a fun to take a look.

Now technically speaking:

SPG is based on passive security model. Which spells: it works only when you call it or when you re-start your PC (option).

This was based on my personal preference: I normally would hate to have another app hanging in operational memory and hogging CPU cycles. Those things are normally at premium, so I'd rather choose to secure my network by proper router settings, n/w setting on PCs, security patches, then as
a last resort - adding-up extra software.

I believe that it clarifies detection issue.

I am sorry for this super-lenghty post but I do hope that it will help you to put SPG into proper category.

My best regards,

Piotr J.
New Years$ posted : I would be interested if the one you posted really works since we had a look at this a while back...It is still setting there as a popular thread to read...but in fact if you follow the pages or second link, it turn out to be a dud.

Disable homepage hijack in IE

The bad news is that windows(98) has a built in bit that allows outsiders (any site) to read, write, and edit (in other words, to "hack") your Windows registry.
