Can't use VPN with Bellsouth DSL???Can't use VPN with Bellsouth DSL??? I ordered Bell South DSL so that I could use my VPN (virtual private network) through work. When I install the VPN, I cannot use the DSL. I get this error: Error 0087 Tap does not have IP address, Tap driver not ready. Does anyone know what this means and does anyone have a solution? I am using windows 95 on this laptop. My VPN people have no solution and think its Bellsouth's problem. Bellsouth says I can't use VPN with Win 95, which I don't believe is true. Help! Sharon |

I had the same problem. I uninstalled Enternet300 and installed Ras PPPOE and works fine now. BTW, there's a "cleanup" program on BSIS driver/download page which cleans up stuff uninstall program doesn't touch. |

Ok, I have hope. Where would I find Ras PPPOE that you spoke of? Thanks. |

Do I have to have Windows 98 to download this RAS PPPOE? I have windows 95 and this is not my machine, it's my employers... |

I believe that RASPPPOE will work on Win95 as long as you have the latest version of Microsoft's Dial-up networking installed.

I don't know for sure, but the author's FAQ states that Win95 is not supported. Hopefully Leevis is correct and it'll work even if not specifically supported. Good luck. RJ |

Another option for you, would be to pick up a router of some sort. (Cayman, Linksys, Netgear) I came across a customer in the resent past who had the same problem, and moving the PPP negotiation off the computer and on to a piece of hardware cleared it up immediately. I am going to assume you are using the Alcatel Speed Touch Home since Win 95 does not support USB, so this should not be to terribly difficult for you to do. Please understand that if you have any problems in the future with your ADSL, and need to call the helpdesk, you will have to disconnect the router and reload the NTS client to receive any support. » www.cayman.com/choose.as ··· ndex.asp» www.netgear.com/» www.linksys.comHope this helps.... OT but here we go!said by mooneybeams: so what exactly is a punch buggy (or where does the term come from)...my 7 year old daughter yells that out everytime she sees a VW!
She doesn't hit you or any of her siblings? It's just a little game. Basically whoever spots a Beetle during a road trip (this is when my brother and I played it) gets to punch whoever misses it. At least that is how my brother and I played it when we were very young . So you look for Beetles and have some fun. So, say there is a yellow Beetle cruising down the road. If you spot it first, you say "punch buggy yellow" and proceed with punching the other person. Better excuse for hitting a younger brother than "he's hogging the armrest" or "he's staring at me"... all the typical bickering brothers/sisters do after being cooped up in a car for a few hours... |

Re: Can't use VPN with Bellsouth DSL???My IT dept at work said VPN doesn't work with DSL. I found this site and as of two nights ago, I've proved them wrong, thanks from the help on this site.
Like Hooked_on_Sony said, remove the Ethernet 300 software. That is the problem because it does the PPoE negotiation and that conflicts with the VPN client on your PC. RasPPoE is an option or just buy a psudo firewall/router like the NetGear RP114 ($96 at Best Buy)since it will pass IPSec and PPTP. Punch Buggy is right that since the router will do the PPoE negotiation, you can remove the Ethernet 300 program from your PC and not have to deal with it ever again. The router stays connected.
I was expecting the worst since the RP114 was a breeze to setup and network my two pcs (both Win2k). I figured the VPN would be a real pain. It was as simple as booting the pc (already connected to the internet since the router is always on and connected) and starting the VPN client. I was accessing company info in less than a minute.

BTW, Win95 does support USBIn December '97 I purchased a PII-300 from Gateway which was loaded with Windows 95 Version 2. The install CD that came with it also said on it in italics "with USB support". It also included dialup networking. |

OOPS! Forgot about version 2, but I think we were able to get to the bottom of the actual problem.

Don't have a answer on your problem, but I VPN fine with BST, DSL, STH, and linksys. |

Re: Can't use VPN with Bellsouth DSL???Ok, I tried to download RASPPOE after getting the latest update to Windows Dial Up Networking (remember I have WIN 95) and I get this error:
Failed to inititalize the TAPI library. error. Please run SFC and reboot.
Does anyone know what SFC is or what I should do?
Thanks. |

I don't think RASPPOE works with Win 95 |

After careful review, it appears you are correct. RASPPPOE won't run under Win95 after all.

Actually VPN can work with a Bellsouth DSL line, as Bellsouth offers the service to it employees who need to be able to work from home and want to use DSL instead of Dial-up. At least thats what a friend of mine who works at Bellsouth told me.. |

many of us use VPN with Bellsouth. My company uses Nortel's Extranet client software and all I have to do is connect, then start my VPN client. Did not have to make any changes on my SMC router. |
