Re: verizon crapping out in queens NY

As many of you may know, a router failed in the Verizon network this afternoon causing problems for some Verizon FiOS and High Speed Internet users. Here’s what happened.

The router in question is in New York City and handles traffic from the Verizon network to the larger Internet. It is one of a number of such routers in our network.

When routers have problems, they are designed to report that they are sick. Internet traffic is rerouted to adjacent routers automatically and sent around the trouble spot. In this case, that didn’t happen. The router went into a hung state and did not appear to the rest of the network as though it was having problems.

That meant that some user traffic from the northeast continued to flow to the stalled router, but couldn’t be processed. Presto – an outage for those users. Verizon FiOS, High Speed Internet and small business customers were affected.

The problem occurred at approximately 3:15 EDT and was detected and resolved :40 minutes later. Traffic began to flow normally and customers returned to service at that point.

Currently, we’re monitoring the router and the network watching for any other problems.>

still seems to be messed up here though, currently 5:43 PM and my speeds are still around 500kbit down and 80kbit up and my ping is too high to to even use anything other than a web browser.

speedtest: it has actually gotten slower

80kbit upload and 500kbit download and a 1153ms ping.

skype as well as my other im programs and my other networking devices such as my cellphone that supports wifi to get service since tmobile sucks and i get 1 or 0 bars reception in my area, ping is too high for it to use wifi for calls. the only thing that works fine is google and this site but they take a few minutes to load

the things that really sucks is that the service has been getting slower long before this network problem with the railed router. when I first got verizon fios, the first few days, my speed test pings were about 2ms and my download speeds were around 19.8-19.9 mbit/s and my upload speeds were 4.8 to 4.8 mbit/s all the time

then after about 2 weeks, the speed began slowing down in the afternoon and speeding up at night and early morning hours and the ping began to be around 6-15ms all the time , since then the window o slow access has been getting wider and wider, before it was just a few hours a day now it is almost half of the day. it is only getting worst.
