ross7 posted : Let's be clear. You have a IDE hard drive, an IDE CR/ROM drive, and a SATA DVD/RW?

If so, you have one IDE 40-pin header on the motherboard to which you connect the two IDE drives as follows:

1) IDE Hard drive is jumpered as [Master] (or more correctly, [Master/Slave Present]), and the IDE CD/ROM is jumpered as [Slave]. OR, both IDE drives are jumpered as [Cable Select].

2) You have an 80-wire/40-pin IDE data cable with a Blue end connector, a Gray middle connector, and a Black end connector. The Blue end connector is attached to the motherboard IDE header, the Gray middle connector is attached to the CD/ROM drive, and the Black end connector is attached to the hard drive. The Red wire of the IDE data cable is oriented to pin #1 of the on-board IDE header, and to the power cable connector end of the IDE connector (pin #1) on each of the IDE drives.

3) You have the SATA DVD/RW drive attached via a SATA cable to one of the six on-board SATA headers. It doesn't really matter which one, as each SATA device is a "master", and I only specified SATA2-0 so we would be talking apples to apples when discussing the various drives and their points of connection.

4) In your BIOS, you are able to set IDE device detection to [None], [Auto] and [Manual].

5) For channel-0/device-0 (HDD), and channel--0/device1 (CD/ROM), you must set IDE device detection to [Auto], or [Manual], to detect a drive attached to the the on-board IDE header. NOTE: If you choose [Manual], you must enter the drives parameters; e.g., head/cylinder/sector info in the case of a hard drive. If you choose [Auto], the BIOS determines the type of device, and its characteristics. [Auto] is the preferred setting. If you leave the BIOS set at its default value of [None] for each IDE device, it will assume NO DEVICE is connected to that channel/position. Select [Auto] for at least the channels/positions you have devices connected to, other wise set all IDE device channels/positons to [Auto]. However, if all are set to [Auto], the system boot will be delayed to search for the "connected" devices that aren't really there.

6) So, refer to #1, above, and remember to set the boot order in the BIOS to CD/ROM, CD/ROM and HDD (or Floppy, USB, LS120, ZIP, etc.). The BIOS will look at each optical drive in turn to find the optical drive with the media in it, and try to boot from it. If the operating system/installer fails to find/boot from the whichever optical drive has the media in it, it will fail-over to the next device that is bootable; the HDD, Floppy, USB, LS120, ZIP, etc., as selected in the boot order in the BIOS.

7) Re-check your IDE drive jumpers. Check your IDE cable to determine it is good; e.g., test it on another system. Check the power connectors from the power supply to the CD/ROM drive. Check your BIOS setup for boot order, IDE device mode and IDE device recognition. TURN OFF RAID in the BIOS.

8) Leave the SATA DVD/RW drive disconnected entirely from the system until you have both the HDD and the CD/ROM working on IDE channel-0, device-0 and device-1, respectively, and recognized correctly as Master (HDD)/Slave (CD/ROM). Once those two drives are setup and properly working, then connect the SATA drive to a SATA header, and enable IDE Device detection for that channel/position. When all three drives are properly set up and working, set the boot order to boot from the optical devices first and second, before the HDD.

9) Check to see if your BIOS has a selection to set SCSI/SATA device boot order. If it does, set it to [SATA/SCSI].

10) If you have the HDD and the DVD being recognized correctly without the CD/ROM drive installed, as you say you have, and the boot device set to [CD/ROM]-[CD/ROM]-[HDD] order, you should be able to boot from the Windows media, if it is bootable and not just an upgrade disk. You can always add the CD/ROM drive back into the system after you have Windows installed, and working.

Good luck!

ross7 posted : Check out the manual pages above to see if you are configured correctly. You can download the manual (6.56MB) from GigaByte's website.

As can be seen, the motherboard only has a single IDE 40-pin channel connector. You have the PATA HDD and the ATAPI optical drive as Master/Slave (respectively) attached to this controller.

Your SATA optical drive could be attached to any of the available SATA ports shown on the mobo layout, but preferably, as I have highlighted, SATA2-0. Enable [AUTO] detect for IDE Channel 0 Master/Slave, and IDE Channel 1 Master. Leave the rest of the IDE channels at the default [None].
