[hard drive] Hard Drive Setup

I have a machine that is about 3 years old and I am in the process of adding a new IDE drive. My question is, which setup provides a more reliable ribbon cable connection, Cable Select or the old way of selecting Master and Slave?

This system will recognize either and I would like to pick the best choice.

Thanks,

Zach

I have always used master and slave when I needed to - found it just as easy as cable select.

That article: "Cable select never caught on" Say what??? What a ridiculous statement. EVERY Dell and HP/Compaq computer that I've ever seen (it's a lot of them) has used CS for IDE drives. Why? Because they spend so little time in assembly, the time spent fiddling with jumpers (and setting them improperly, inevitably) would drag down productivity. It means that ALL hard disks in stock are set the same way (CS). Everything in those machines is designed for fast factory assembly with the least manual operations possible. Diddling jumpers is definitely something they don't want to have to do if they don't have to.

Yes. Go ahead and use CS. For the same reason -- you don't have to think about the jumpers being screwed up.

SRR2,

Thanks for the input. I put that link on my previous post so everyone would have a reference point to continue reading. I am not sure how old the article is but my guess is several years!!

Anyway I went with CS to eliminate any confusion in the future and it is simple!
