Copy Protection

Seems as though Cablevision is playing the copy protection game now. I wonder why they have decided that Science Channel HD is worthy of it, I guess shows like "How It's Made" are popular for piracy these days? Seems kind of ridiculous.

Thats Discovery Networks, not Cablevision. They request the 0x2 (Copy Once) flag on a good deal of their programming. Cablevision merely honors the request as they are supposed to.

My guess is that is that he is trying to transfer recordings from his Tivo to Tivo Desktop

I have read that Discovery Networks typically does this with shows that they also sell on DVD from their website. It applies to direct digital recordings from something like Tivo to Tivo Desktop or Desktop Plus, but I believe an analog recording can be made using the video outputs on the Tivo.

It's just ridiculous that they copy protect anything that's available on DVD to begin with. Most of the crap that you see on the internet comes from ripped DVD's anyway, nobody downloads shows with commercials, so I don't understand how they think that this helps fight piracy. I can understand the movie channels being protected, but there's no reason for shows that have ads to be copy protected.
