BSDs is more closely associated with UNIX, and at one time was just a variation of UNIX. Linux on the other hand is a collection of packages distributed together that mimic many aspects of UNIX. I know that this has little bearing on the OPs original point, but I thought that I should clarify this.
Anyways, I'm a fan of GNU/Linux, and very rarely see a need to evangelize. I'm an arts student, and so my schools computers labs are almost exclusively iMacs. I can count on most of my peers to be carrying around a MacBook. I just pull out my thinkpad or my netbook and go on.
