Re: Insulation set back for can lights

As an insulation Contractor we use thin rolled aluminium to make a "cone" around the light about 16" high. Blow insulation upto and around the aluminium then cover the "cone" with a fiberglass Batt.

This leaves an adaqute air barriar for the light not to ignite any fires.

BTW it looks like you also have less then adequate insulation in your attic. those look like 2x6 truss spanners and judging by the way your insulation looks compartive to the spanner it isnt enough.

You shopuld always have at least an r-30 in your attic and sense you have a mixture of cellulose and fiberglass in there its hard to tell what R-value you might have.
r-30 fiberglass = 10.25"
r-30 cellulose = 8.5"

Thanks for the info. The attic is blown to R-44. That particular area is next to a large area that has OSB sheathing over it for the furnaces - one for upstairs, one for downstairs.T hat area just has the 2x8 joists filled w/ fiberglass batts.
