Re: All good things must come to an end

Thanks, yet are you 100% sure? Seems like they'd want some $$$ for email addresses

I believe this to be true
Here's a link to a 7 page thread that has many skeptical posters there are also details about the old policy and the new policy

You decide
»Keep sbcglobal.net or att.net email address after DSL cancel

Ah, I see, thanks. That's kinda what I thought, would be active for 'free' for 30 or 60 days, then would have to pay to retain them on a monthly basis. I'll do more research before I make the call. Gotta have my ducks in a row..

That is the old policy, to keep the email active the only option was to pay for a dial up account

The new policy allows the email to remain active but you can only access the email via
att.my.yahoo.com

DOH, that's right since they've basically converted everyone to a yahoo account. I've already setup all accounts to be accessible via yahoo. So if I wanted to keep the email addresses as POP, I'd have to pay for dial-up, otherwise scott free with yahoo. Cool.. I will confirm when I call them to be 100% sure. Thanks for the help

Correct
Don't be surprised if when you "call in" the person you talk to denies this

In the thread I linked a member of the at&t direct staff comfirmed that after the dsl is canceled the email will remain active

Actually, I think the free access with Yahoo! only covers using webmail because AT&T will no longer be paying Yahoo! for a Yahoo! Mail Plus account, and the Yahoo! Classic email is webmail access only. However, I think the yearly fee to upgrade from Yahoo! Classic to Yahoo Premium is $19.99 per year.

How much does Yahoo! Mail Plus cost?

You are correct the "free" email is web access only, if pop access is desired a dialup account will provide that
The email address remains the same after the conversion to "free" only the access changes

But if you move outside an AT&T service area, I don't think that you can subscribe to an AT&T dialup service since AT&T WorldNet is now officially dead. That was why I mentioned doing the Yahoo! Mail Plus upgrade. Do you have information that the AT&T/Yahoo partnership agreement prohibits Yahoo! from upgrading a former AT&T customer?

Nationwide access, yes, but I was not sure about nationwide signup capability.

I know that previously, BellSouth dialup service had to be associated with and billed on a BellSouth telephone account, so ordering the service without having a BellSouth POTS or ISDN account was not possible. I know that I had to give up a BellSouth dialup service that I had for many years when I dropped my BellSouth POTS line and started using Vonage over a Comcast connection.

I just checked the support pages, and I see that now you can associate an AT&T dialup account (but still not a DSL account) with a credit card, just as you could with an AT&T WorldNet dialup account.

That which we call a rose
By any other name ...

That option is not available to legacy BellSouth customers. We can go on-line and pay the bill with a credit/debit card, or setup an automatic credit card or bank draft payment plan, but the billing is always associated with an AT&T telephone number (even with a DSL Direct account with no voice service).

Actually, I am not sure that a legacy BellSouth customer can actually get a dialup account without an AT&T telephone number. The page I found that implied that the account could be setup using a credit card, was actually a legacy SBC page. The legacy BellSouth order page only gave a phone number to call to setup a dialup account (there was no mention of being able to establish an account using only a credit card).

We are always treated as second class citizens by AT&T, and I doubt that is going to change anytime soon. At least AT&T is now charging the legacy SBC customers a similar price for DSL service, but that is not really a very good step in the right direction.

About a month ago when I was logged on to WebMail I found a place (HELP) to submit questions and I asked Yahoo Mail the following...

My email account XYZ@bellsouth.net is accessible through the yahoo portal and POP3 access. I would like to know what happens if I terminate my ATT DSL and go with a different broadband ISP.

Would XYZ@bellsouth.net convert into a free yahoo account?
Would XYZ@bellsouth.net be eligible to be upgraded to Yahoo Mail Plus?
Would my subaccounts also be eligible for upgrading to Mail Plus and maintaining their current xxx@bellsouth.net name

You may have that option at the yahoo portal

To order at&t dialup you must call to setup a account
I have elite 6016kbps/768kbps before the recent price increase it was $35.00 now it's $38.00
Pro and express prices increased $3.00
The $10.00 basic is now $15.00
