[XPPro] Lost XP Theme, Can't Load Progams, and Get RPC Error MsgHello Broadbanders!
I suddenly got an error message about my RPC server being maxed out while running my computer.
"HP AiO Device Object Server RegisterClassObjects failed: hRes=0x800706BA
Maximum retry attempts exceeded"
Problems: I noticed that my xp theme was gone, I couldn't navigate to my windows start button anymore, and most, if not all, of my programs weren't functional. My relatively new computer was running as if my hardware was required for windows 3.1. So I tried researching google on my backup computer for several hours to see if there were fixes but I couldn't find any. That's why I'm here to see if you gurus can help.
Here are several things I've tried to get it running back to normal but no luck: I restarted my computer with all of my startup programs and non microsoft services disabled using msconfig and that didn't work. Removed HP printing software. I've tried to run McAfee virus scan (after reactivating in in msconfig) and it doesn't run. In "Services and Applications" under computer management I noticed that all of my automatic window services that's set to automatic did not start automatically. Ran my computer in safe mode but it don't make a difference in terms of trying to enable/disable certain services or programs. I tried to disable Remote Prodecure Call from msconfig because I couldn't do it under "Services and Applications" but it tell me that its "essential services cannot be disabled" I ran sfc / scannow I ran chkdsk... I get the same results except the RCP error message pop up window went away after up every reboot. I guess removing the hp software got rid of the error msg.
I hope I can get some guidance me in any way to get this resolved.
Thanks in advance! |

I'm running two personal subscriptions of the McAfee internet security and virus scan. They just released an update yesterday and it installed on both computers. I haven't had any problems with it on this computer. Thanks for pointing that out... In the event viewer application log: I got three warnings from Msinstaller - event 1015 around 2pm. (That's probably around the time I got the error msg) and... One error from the eventsystem - category 50 - event 4609 In the even viewer system log: I get on error from the service contrl manager - event 7031 I'm running the chkdsk again from right-clicking the hard disk --> properties-->tools-->error checking ---> check now and it asked me to restart to scan. I'm waiting for the results. When I ran chkdsk the first time from cmd prompt, it closed automatically without showing me the results. @edit: The results came back as HDD being clean..."volume is clean" |

I realize none of my essential window xp servies load/start. I can't double click or right click to start or stop any one of them. |

Are you running McAfee Enterprise? If so you might want to confirm the issue isn't McAfee » McAfee FP causing problems today, 4/21EDIT: I see Cudni already pointed this out. |

Nope. I'm just running McAfee Internet Security...thanks! |

It was in fact McAfee -- except mine was the Internet Security version. My computer was infected by their DAT update which deleted my svchost.exe system file. What a joke! This cost me hours trying to figure this out. Maybe I can make it back by shorting their stock in the morning. When you say "while running my computer", what exactly were you doing at the time? Surfing the web, converting a movie, what? Given the number and variety of problems this issue has caused, it seems possible that you're experiencing a major hardware problem, like maybe CPU, motherboard, or power supply failure. RPC errors, services down and unable to be restarted, the Windows Installer suddenly firing up for no apparent reason, etc. These are not good signs. And the machine being relatively new certainly doesn't negate any possibility of its internal hardware failing. I'm not saying that's it, just saying it sure sounds like it could be. |

Whoops! So much for the ideas in my previous post.
You posted your discovery of the problem while I was making that post. (And anonymous posters cannot edit posts.)
Well, at least you figured it out. |

Actually, I wasn't doing anything :-D. I'd stepped away from my computer for about 10 mins and when I got back, there was the error msg with all the problems with it.
My computer is working flawlessly. I doubt it's a hardware issue but thanks for the input.
Get rid of svchost.exe and any computer will be unstable. |
