Out with the old Imac in with the New

The top picture is of the old ratty setup I had. The desk was a mold of other lesser desk and parts at Home Depot. I decided it was time to treat myself and get one of the new i7 Imacs. Not to mention toss out that old desk and try to get something that was not so painful to sit at.

Enter the world of the new Imac. With the following specs-

2.8GHZ QUAD-CORE INTEL CORE I7
4GB 1066MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X2GB
1TB SERIAL ATA DRIVE
ATI RADEON HD 4850 512MB
8X DOUBLE-LAYER SUPERDRIVE
APPLE MAGIC MOUSE
COUNTRY KIT,IMAC 27-INCH

Thinking that wasn't enough I decided to throw in the mix a DELL U2711 Monitor. It may not be LED back lit like the Imac but the picture, especially HD content, is better than the Mac at least to me.

This thing is a screamer, nothing rocks more than having 1080p BluRay rips running in the Dell monitor and doing all my regular stuff in the Imac screen and it not skipping a beat. I will say the back of that thing runs really really hot like to the point that it's close to not being able to be touched.

I apologize if it seems like I'm bragging I just really dig my new setup and if anyone is debating on whether or not an i7 is worth the extra cost let me tell you it sure is.

Also if anyone is interested I am selling my old Imac

Thanks. I hear ya on the expense but it's worth it. I used that previous one for about or a little over 4 years and it worked great the whole time. It performed really well and I am sure this new one will to. I see them as long term investments and so far each one has paid off, well hell almost all my Apple gear has. (Airport extreme, iphone, macbook, imac, etc) Haven't had complaints or trouble with them yet. So it's justified to spend a good chunk on the gear.

That's one heck of an upgrade. Too bad it didn't come with blu-Ray.

Yeah I debated on the Imac or getting a full blown Mac Pro. I decided since the DELL monitor has so many inputs if I ever wanted to watch Blu-Ray I would just get a cheap PS3 and pump it through there. I like the slim profile of an Imac and the i7 seems to have better performance than the current chips in the mac Pros so I went that direction.

Because the resale value on used Mac systems is still very pricey compared to PC's, have you thought about donating it to a worthy/Charitable organization locally if you get no buyers? Putting it on Ebay runs the risk of your getting far less then the $700 you're asking for it

Not only would you get a 100% write off on your taxes of the depreciated value of the imac, you'd also get a good feeling knowing that you've helped the less fortunate..

Just a thought....

yeah I'm going to drop the price down to about $550 or so. I thought they were going for around $700 but I was looking at the wrong model when I was comparison pricing.

The good thing about the U2711 is it's an IPS screen, surprised you think it looks better than the imac's screen though. Perhaps because in video it is doing 1920x1080 and not having to upscale to the imac's 2560xwhatever res?

I think it's hilarious, IMHO. I think 90% of 27" iMac buyers I've asked would've been happier with it if the LCD was 1920x1080.

Let me tell you what...I want a Mac pretty bad, but at the same time, I have no acutal need for one! it's one of those things if I were to buy, it would be more of eye candy/toy than anything else.......If it wasn't for the price, I'd own one or 2 right now.... Just cant justify that cost!

Actually both monitors are running 2560x1440 and the U2711 in the daylight isn't as good as the Imac because of the LED back lit it runs but the U2711 running HD at night has a lot deeper blacks and colors even though it is just an IPS panel and not back lit.

Yeah I hear ya the cost gets a lot of people and they just don't see why they need to throw down so much cash. As I said above to me these are long term investments, I don't buy computers every year like I did when I was building and using PC's a lot more than the Mac side of things so a decent amount of cash at a nice setup will last me a good amount of time.

Overall I couldn't be happier with everything, this thing screams and works flawlessly.

I don't know why anyone would want less screen real estate.

Pft I didn't realize the U2711 was the res it was. Been a while

Well, the majority of the whining I've seen about the iMac's high screen res, was from people whining about how it "can't do 1080p natively". Especially those complaining about the lack of screen res scaling on the input. (Granted, if it could scale like that input lag would be involved).

Just saying

I suggest you hang on to old reliable for a while. A close relative is on their 3rd iMac 27 same config as yours. First one lasted 7 days, 2nd about 14-20 days and 3rd was acquired on 1 May and is still working. Very low usage they just run hot and fail. I suspect the quad core 860 is not properly cooled ?
The heat flowing out of the vent, upper left is like no other computer I've ever used, but then I'm a PC guy.

yeah the quad does run hot in fact really hot when running HD on one monitor and regular computing on the other. I would be interested though to see some of the computer desks and setups people are putting these computers into and see if that helped them create the errors.

For now the unit appears to be working absolutely wonderful. No complaints whatsoever. Hopefully that stays true.

here is an updated pic after I setup everything with an Ergotron mount. I will say I am really impressed with the build quality of these mounts, they are really solid.

I know it's my opinion, but why not put the two screens closer together if they're being run as one concurrent desktop?

I just feel it would make things easier on you/your eyes/etc.

Never cared for monitors to be one big concurrent desktop. Been running dual monitors for as long as I can remember and I never went for the concurrent desktop look.

As it is now I like having the 2nd one apart and at an angle because I usually watch movies or TV on it and it's easier to swing it toward me so I can see it better out of the corner of my eye. I find it easier in this kind of configuration.

I saw a picture of Al Gore's setup awhile back- he had 3 monitors (30" Cinema Displays, if I recall correctly).

Way too messy for me. First thing I'd do is organize the fuck out of that office. Get a filing cabinet. Arrange the bookshelf. Make it orderly. Look how little room he has for typing and using the mouse. I'd also get a wider desk, as that one isn't cutting it. Silly Al Gore.
