WRT54GL as Access Point only (no DHCP and no Routing)So I want to use my WRT54GL with DDWRT standard firmware as a access point to my network only.
I have a Cisco ASA firewall and I want to connect the WRT54GL to it.
The firewall is providing DHCP and routing to different network.
How do I set it up for the WRT54GL?? Having great deal of trouble configuring it to talk with my firewall... Just wanted the WRT54GL to act as a access point (like a wireless switch) and nothing else!
Or is there a way to setup WRT54GL to access point mode only? It seems that if I connect using WAN port, I will have to create another network... which i dont want, as I want both firewall and wireless to be on same network.
Do I connect firewall to the WAN port on the WRT54GL? Any hint? |

» Wireless Networking Forum FAQ » Using a Wireless Router as an Access PointYou do not use the WAN port, you turn off the DHCP server You give it an IP Address inside the subnet and outside the DHCP scope |

When you say outside the scope of DHCP... you referring the DHCP range provided by the firewall? If so, why? |

Many DHCP servers do not check for existing Static IPs, so will assign a Dynamic IP to some device identical to the one your AP is using. If your Firewall lets you reserve IP Addresses, you can do that, instead. |

It goes from a setting of "DHCPee" to "Static", or something like that. And then there is the check box thingy to add the WAN to the LAN for a 5 hole LAN. Edit - Since the DHCPee server is also disabled in DD-WRT on the WRT access point, then whatever it may be set to is also irrelevent, as you have pointed out. |

1) Set the IP of the WRT54GL to some address inside your network but outside your network's DHCP range. This setting to include: ADDRESS, NETMASK, GATEWAY and DNS server(s) and completely in the LAN settings of the WRT54GL.
Yell if you're not sure of any of those 4 settings.
2) Turn OFF the DHCP server on the WRT54GL's LAN. 3) Turn OFF and do not use the WRT54GL's WAN. 4) Connect WRT54GL LAN to your network. 5) Setup wireless.
Now, wireless clients will have access to the internet and your network, the WRT54GL will be able to reach time servers on the net, but what exactly do you mean by "as an access point to my network only"? I assume you want wireless clients to access the net?
I'm assuming the firewall provides what's needed for this "other network" it routes to, something like a VPN? Hopefully you know this difference since there's many ways this could be set up. If it is simple routing a range of IPs then you're really in the context of that firewall to allow/block those routes. |

I think I have enough to work on it for now...
And you are right, I will need internet acccess and my firewall is allowing that...
In terms of routing, is not really routing but allow/block traffic accordingly. |

Great! I think you got the idea - wireless clients will join your network just like they were plugged in... even the same DHCP server which may be what you need to setup the firewall to your liking. Good luck! |
