Who needs the Weather Channel? Even on cable or sat?I wonder how many people even use it anymore. I get my weather from a smartphone app and if I need more info(say for an approaching hurricane) I can use the internet. And digital STB's let you pull up weather from a menu. I just don't see the need anymore for a 24 hr weather channel. |

Yeah I agree, in this day in age the Weather channel is irrelevant and they know it. Between having a button on my remote that tells me the current weather, and having a computer/iphone near bye at all times I can't think of the last time that I actually flipped to the weather channel on purpose. |

They would probably be better off ditching the Weather Channel. They seem to be going the way of MTV these days (music channel with no music). Mostof the time I turn to TWC, they aren't talking about the current weather. |

I just don't see the need anymore for a 24 hr weather channel. neither do many other people. i suspect thats why they don't always run weather -- but have their own programming on weather disasters, weather preparedness, etc. they make for some good programming -- in the same vein as discovery channel -- but their weather coverage started to fall down, especially for the southwest (at least in my opinion). i haven't watched twc in a few years, and even then it was mostly for background noise while i fell asleep or when i woke up and was catching a 6am flight (and crapping my pants when the low temps for the night were a crisp 94 degrees). since cancelling cable, i decided to front the $10/year for wunderground. its one of my toolbar bookmarks and i have all of my locations saved so a quick click gives me the information i need. i even have it on my mobile phones so my information (including noaa weather discussions) are never too far away. twc served a niche market before the era of prevalent highspeed internet or awesome web apis from which to build. while its nice to have -- i can't say it would ever be a dealbreaker if it was removed from a channel lineup. q. |

Ummmm.. MANY people use and WATCH the weather channel these days. When there is a major storm, there is live coverage. There are also other weather related shows that are played that people like similar to that of Nat Geo and Discovery.
It's not just about getting the forecast.
If Dish drops the weather channel, they're making a big mistake. These providers need to stop drumming up stories like "Our customers told us they just want the weather report" crap.. becuase it's just crap they use to back up their reasons why the millionaires fight the billionaires.
If I want to know what the weather is like, I look out the window. I check it once a day, if I care.. but I, and MANY other people I know - especially in storm prone areas - DO watch the weather channel. |

More if there was an approaching storm on the horizon. These days, I don't watch it, but it's only due to a lack of time. |

If only corporations would accept death, we'd have a happier world. But as it stands, they'll do anything to survive, regardless of their value to society. |

When there is a tornado warning ( and that happens A LOT in our area ) it kind of helps. The "local" stations out of Nashville are basically useless when it comes to our area being 80 miles away. We tend to get ignored. When there is a warning the Weather Channel actually tells us the location and direction of it. I'm not sitting and hoping the "local" Nashville news MIGHT talk about us. |

I think someone purchased them, and that is when it started to downhill, but I could be wrong. |

I think the only reason they're willing to work things out, is because of the name brand people often see -vs- the real usefulness. |

Many Network Operations Centers use it for monitoring the weather in their network, and to plan for severe weather before it strikes...
But I agree, I have many weather APPS on my ipod touch, TWC is good to watch when you need weather info...

NOAA operates a nationwide network of weather radio stations you can listen to at any time. Pick up a $20 receiver, turn it on and listen away. Updates are timely and the stations do a great job at reporting local weather. |

I don't watch weather on the TV I am out in it. At any rate Accuweather is better. I have their App installed on my Touch, Plus a sweet aviation weather app, which tells me it is -82 below at the south pole as I type this. I am getting weather alerts on my PC, and have a weather radio through which the National Weather notifies me of any thing nasty. The heroic reporter in the middle of the weather conflagration just does not hack it with me. Foxnews does this better anyway, unless it is Geraldo Rivera crying his eyes out...."Oh the humanity of it all" this last makes me wish for a animated puking emoticon |
