fiberguy2 posted : I'd REALLY find 300,000 viewers hard to believe, to be honest.. and from the NY Times?

"The Weather Channel brand is also unequalled in reach in the news/information category. When you combine cable and online, we draw a monthly audience of more than 127 million unique viewers and users"

Source: 1Nielsen Fusion. Average monthly cable-only unduplicated viewer 2+ and online audience of June-August 2008

What you saw in the NY Times article was this:
The channel’s ratings are up, at least on a total day basis, with 284,000 viewers watching at any given time this year, up from 231,000 last year and 271,000 in 2008.

This doesn't say that's all they have as viewers.. it's what they are measuring who watches it at any given time. You also failed to mention that ratings are up as well as the static viewership numbers.

Quite honestly, and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but Dish feels they are going to make a better weather channel than the weather channel? I can point out hundreds of reasons why it will fail.

I simply wonder if this has anything to do with the fact NBC has TWC now and Comcast is about to get NBC. Or, it sounds to me, more, that Dish wants to give the illusion that they're provider more service to their customer, for less cost to themselves, while delivery less.

But, when ratings go up, so does the price. Anyone catch how much Fox News Channel's ratings went up and what they wanted per sub after it? ..and around here, these parts, not too many people care for Fox News, do they?

jsz0 posted : According to the NY Times TWC's average viewership is only 300,000 people. Of course during a major weather event that number goes up. To put that in perspective Dish has about 13 million customers. So there's probably a good argument to be made that the other 12.7 million customers who don't watch the channel wouldn't like paying significantly more for it. Obviously it's not quite that simple but if every channel that can pull 300,000 viewers wants more money then customers are in for massive rate hikes.

fiberguy2 posted : They don't break into every location anytime there is a storm dude.. it's not your local news. Tell me an area where tornado & severe weather activity lives and a local station that doesn't have 5 hours of non-stop coverage.

The weather channel DOES stay on top of "continuing coverage" on the nasty ones, however, becuase the chances that local stations going out or not being able to broadcast is much greater than a cable / satellite channel being able to cover the story. Remember Katrina? Weather Channel covered that extensively while many of the locals couldn't stay on the air.

Do you really need a national station to cover your tornado for you? Or is your local broadcasting not enough? In cases like this, up here in MN, we don't need to know about every tornado, minute by minute, in GA like you don't need to know about the ones in MN. When we have them up here, our locals will pinpoint the storm to the minute based on the neighborhood - the WX channel doesn't, nor do they need to.

I'm GLAD that the WX Channel has moved away from day and night 24 hour national weather forecasts and added more general weather related content... when they did, it became a much more worth while channel to watch.

But back to what you said.. were your local tv stations not broadcasting that tornado coverage for you? If so, it seems like any beef about that should be focused on them, not the WX channel.

bumwolf posted : I still watch it when there's a weather disaster going on. Can't find information anywhere else. All the news channels these days have their heads up washington's rear end. Though the Weather Channel has started to urk me lately. Recent example Tornado outbreak in Arkansas and they ran a movie instead of coverage. Sorry I don't watch the Weather Channel for movies or constant documentary reruns. I wouldn't mind a documentary every now and then but you don't have to rerun them into the ground. I'm a dish network customer and I won't be sad to see them go. TWC is destined to the graveyard of TV networks that have lost their purpose.
Another note local news coverage of weather here lately has been abysmal.
