I don't think the tape lifted here as much as the wall shifted and the tape separated. It's probably nothing to worry about other than how do you patch it and not make it look worse than it does now. Just shoving Krack-Kote in the open space probably isn't going to hold as the wall shifts again. You need to use *their* fiberglass tape and that would make a mess here.

Kramer posted : My guess is the garage slab is sinking and your house has shifted down a bit. Foundations settle to some degree, but unfortunately they don't do it at a uniform pace all around your house. I think if you put a 4 foot level in various places in the room you will find a consistent drop towards that set of windows. I have some pretty severe shifting towards the center of my house which made for some really nasty adjustment cuts in the doors I just installed all over my downstairs. The product that lilhurricane mentioned has worked pretty well over a number of years where I used their fine mesh fiberglass tape. I'm not sure this would be a great application here because you would never match the stucco pattern. I recently saw a vinyl spray at my local hardware store that is supposed to cover cracks and stretch with their movement. Something like that might work well here and preserve the stucco pattern. 100 bucks to paint a wall is very reasonable but I'm not sure caulking would fill in that hairline crack without ruining the look of your stucco.

Axell posted : I would use DAP acrylic caulk plus silicone (the 35 yr. stuff). Get the DAP to go into the crack a half inch or so. Clean off the excess with a soft wet rag. Let it dry for a week!
It will shrink, drawing the crack together a little. Then put a light coat of DAP over this and again wipe it down with a damp cloth.
This can then be painted within four hours or so because it will be a thin coat of DAP. In order to make the cracks 'disappear' the color and texture of the paint must be matched precisely. This may have to wait until you repaint the entire room. Finally, moderate the humidity a little less severely and you should be OK.
This opinion comes after many years of professional repair work, fixing work done by builders who are in a hurry to get the job done and get their money.
Waterbug posted : You said that your wife had been running a "humidifier" in the room. I would consider that VERY unusual in the Pacific Northwest, especially in the summer. My guess is that she is running a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier would draw moisture out of the room and the wall studs, causing them to shrink. Shrinking studs would stress the wallboard joints and cause the weak point (the tape) to fracture. Reintroduce moisture and the studs will expand over time, closing the crack.
If she were running a humidifier, the studs would expand and if you saw anything it would be buckling.

robbin posted : I am fairly accomplished at tape and float and I once tried to use Fiberglas tape in a corner. Never again! It just does not work. It is almost impossible to get it bent into the corner for the tape coat. Then, if you manage that, every time you put on a float coat your trowel catches on every strand. In the end, the tape was cut from the blade in many places. The only way I can see that it would work is to first tape the corner with paper tape and then come back and put a piece of Fiberglas down each side of the corner.

OP -- all the painter is going to do from what you posted is rub some caulking into the crack and then repaint. the shrinkage they are talking about is probably just telling you that the caulking will shrink when it dries and you will still be able to see the crack. The damage is just cosmetic. If it really bothers you I would just carefully try to get a little caulking behind the tape and clean it up really good. You may not even need to repaint if you are careful with the caulking. Personally I would just leave it alone until you are wanting to redecorate, repaint the entire room, etc and then fix it right. That will allow time to see if other areas develop problems. I am talking about waiting years, not days or weeks. These type of problems happen over time.

clevere1 posted : Hey guys, I noticed some cracks on my dry wall today. Just under neither a bay window. It's in a bedroom over a garage. The bay window does not hang at all. It sits atop the roof of the garage. The house was built in 2002.

The cracks are the same on either side of the bay window, under the smaller windows. I don't see any signs on the drywall of water damage (from a leaking window). It almost looks like they didn't secure these pieces when the house was built and they finally just popped up. My wife has been using a humidifier in the room alot lately to help combat allergies. But I wouldn't think it would do this to the walls .. help! Do you need to remove the pieces and take a look at what's going on?
--
Where's th' DAFFY DUCK EXHIBIT??
<TABLE WIDTH=96% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

Close up .. cropped a little to much
