[HSI] Updated WRT54G firmware from ddwrt to tomato..gained speed

Just an FYI, I had a couple lockup issues on my Linksys WRT54G v3.0 router.. I was running the DD-WRT v23 firmware on it, and decided to change to the Tomato firmware, and I gained a ton of speed. I think the DD-WRT was limiting me to 20mbits as I always got like 20.5mbits on speed tests. Once I stuck the Tomato firmware on, I noticed that my downloads were hovering at 3.4/3.5MB/s instead of 2.4MB/s like they always did, so I ran some speedtests (at multiple times) and my peak was 29.72mbits down 3.15 up.. so basically I gained ~9mbits downstream by just swapping firmwares

If any of you guys are running dd-wrt, you might want to give the tomato firmware a shot.

I have always been a Tomato user myself. Rock solid and simple to use. Couple of notes new people miss with Tomato. Be sure to clear NVRAM (thorough) after moving to Tomato. And always clear it before and after when doing an upgrade to another version of Tomato. Then configure. Also depending on the plan you are on and how many devices you have connected. You might be close to maxing out the router. I have a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 with Tomato 1.28. Speed plan is 25mb/3mb and I know it is maxed or extremely close. Using wireless eats up a lot of cpu power and that little 200mhz processor does not cut it any more. I will be moving to a Netgear WNR37AV pretty soon. 680mhz processor!

I was looking at installing tomato (stock firmware is flawless for years) on my WRT54GS to see if I could improve speed to match direct connection performance. After research, I made the assumption that max throughput for 54G would be approx. 22 meg, so I did not upgrade and chance present setup. After reading your post I once again am confused.

nah, go for it.. I just looked and there are people with 30mbit to 50mbit connections that are able to use the full speed with a wrt54g

You're correct, ~22mbit is generally the maximum real world speed you'll see with 802.11g wireless. You should see potentially higher and consistent speeds with a 100mbit wired connection.

You can always try tomato and revert back to the stock firmware if you need to. Good luck!

First instance I have seen where speed increase actually happened, then again 25/3 is very new...if true would be a boost for tomato authors.......could be a big thing considering the following behind this type router...contact them and get their input?

cryptic1911.....please check your connection speed on wireless and let me know if it exceeds 22 meg...
