Other devices on U-verse

I've just order U-verse Internet Max (12M/1.5M) + U-verse Voice ($35/mn 1st year + $200 rebate) from ATTSpecial.com, an internet retailer that is less knowledgable even than ATT sales people.

They say I must buy the all powerful Residential Gateway, although I will not use any of the TV stuff or its wireless features. I really don't want the double NAT situation since I use IPSec VPN regularly. I was not planning on getting a fixed IP. Is there another modem or bridge that will work, either from the open market or that I might talk ATT into supplying?

Also, is there any reason, other party VOIP services and my Grandstream HT502 or my Linksys SPA2102 telephone adapters will have problems over this new ATT service? I won't use thier phones, either.

As for the modem, there is no other option for U-verse internet. However, any VoIP provider should work just fine.

In general the RG is required for authentication with all U-verse VDSL offerings. There is a specific exception for FTTP service if you happen to have FTTP. However since you also purchased U-verse Voice, the RG is also required as it provides the dialtone service.

No problem using any VoIP provider you choose, just understand that only U-verse Voice VoIP is favored by the QoS on the RG. Your third party VoIP traffic will have to complete with other IP traffic.

The RG handles 802.1x authentication on the network. It's a non-negotiable issue for AT&T. You must have it.
