[DSL] Recommendation Best DSL ModemI am not familiar with modem hardware, what would your pick be for stability, speed and low noise ! I don't need wireless, just simple and rock solid performance.
I currently have a SpeedStream 5242 and a 2Wire 2701 and currently on ADSL2+ with Teksavvy/Bell |

I'd get a TP-Link. They're cheap and reliable. What's wrong with the ones you have? |

To add to Mike2009's completely relevant question, if you're having a lot of trouble with two different modems, the problem is likely your wiring or a missing filter.
Edit: Well, maybe not your wiring, it could be the line coming to your house as well. |

ST516 is nice and also recommended by teksavvy. most modems work just fine tho. post a pic of your modem stats. |

There nothing wrong with the two I have, just want to keep an eye out if there any good deals on eBay or Craigslist. Since most of the third party ISPs recommend the SpeedTouch TN516.
I find using a router modem like the SpeedStream 5242E quite unless since I have problems connecting certain online apps like Gigatribe and mIRC that won't connect and I have to use an OS PPPoE access manager to be able to connect. I don't understand why my browser and email apps can connect with the modem based PPPoE, but not the others ? |

I just "test drove" the td-8616 and it worked fine, stays cooler than a st516. td-8816 I believe is the same chipset with a router and more line stats features.
For 23 bux you cant beat it if you are looking for a simple DSL bridge. |

I was able to get most of my online apps to work with my Bell SpeedStream 5242E with the exception of Gigatribe I don't see anywhere in the web interface(Bell firmware) where I can port forward ! With the other apps I was able to change the port within the software and they connected, but with Gigtribe none of those ports seems to work. So I am back using my OS based PPPoE WAN Miniport for PPPoE access which everything connects without a hitch, would rather have the router/modem do the PPPPoE access for a more robust connection than an OS based access. |

Have you tried using a stand-alone router to make the connection? Most of them have very user-friendly GUIs like the modem's interface and using one would definitely let you set up port forwarding and configure many other options if you have the need for it. |

I beleive the TD-8616 is just a straight ADSL2/2+ modem with no router, the TD-8816 is the one that is a router modem, but both are under $30 which is a great buy ! |

Yeah, the TP-Link TD-8816 is dirt-cheap! ...a good buy until there's trouble - which is when "trouble-shooting" is required. |

I've tested just about every dsl modem on the market and for price, performance and durability i'd say the Zoom line outperformed anything else. Of course you could *pay* much more for Cisco modems but my conclusion is the Zoom line of modems are best all around. |

I'm real happy with my TP-Link dsl modem/router. It's a TD-8841 (with the Broadcom chipset). I don't think TP-Link makes them anymore, however, if you can get your hands on one, I'd say go for it.
I also own a Thomson 516, and it's pretty good too. However, it costs more than the TP-Link, gets hotter, and seems to be less tweakable. |

I have my eyes set on the TP-Link TD-8816, but I can't seem to find it locally here in Montreal(for under $30 it is not worthwhile to buy online and pay shipping), most of the local shops have only the TD-8616 or the wireless modem router, I hate wireless for some reason !
Anyone in Montreal know where I can pick-up a TD-8816 for a good price ? |

I pull out the 3M 950ADSL2+ DSL meter. |
