What modem do you have?I have a speedstream 5360 and my girlfriend has the 5260...I keeping seeing reference to others in this forum and am interested in the pros/cons of each and if there is any capping involved with these other modems. I am always getting over 1000k on speed tests so I am not worried if the ons I have is comparable I am just curios. |

Caping has nothing to do with the modem. |

I agree, the cap does not occur @ the modem, just heard some of the older modems were not able to achieve better speeds. |

The type of modem one has is related to the equipment in the Central office. Bell has four types of modems in use. |

This is correct, though the difference is small enough to be irrelevant. |

There is only two types of Bell equipement which limits the modem one user get : DBIC and DSLAM.
DBIC ---> Nortel DSLAM ---> Alcatel SpeedTouch, ALcatel USB and Efficient SpeedStream (all same technology, but Efficient's modems are cheaper) |

I got the Efficient 5360, Works like a charm, (stick your head to its case, ull hear facinating sounds) , and the speeds are optimal (over 1000k all the time). Had the Alcatel USB, great modem, speeds were optimal (over 1000k aswell) but the problem was that I kept loosing sync(inconsistant soo I know its not my system). Swapped if for the Efficient and only dropped connection once this month. |

You cant put it the other way (maybe the older version of the 5360) but the one i have you cant do it(look at the pic above) it has rounded edges. |

I chucked my Alcatel on top of my monitor. I got sick of it occupying so much of my desk. Even though Bell tells you to keep it at least 1 foot away from your monitor, it hasn't impacted my speed or performance at all. |

You'll never get 1000 kbps with the Nortel modem. It's capped at 960.
Plus, the reason why their not changing you over to DSLAM could be as simple as the CO doesn't have the room for a DSLAM rack. |

Thats true and even the finest tweakers wont get those speeds running on that lousy modem. Ive tweaked my cousins to the max (considering he has got a huge extentino cord running) Ive only got it to work at a max of 850/103. |

I sure loved that USB thing, but it gave too many loss of sync probs(power supply probs i guess), now im with my SpeedStream which is equally as good. The SpeedTouch has a funny look to it, it's jazzy |

all you guys are neet and organized.
I don't have a digi-cam so you'll have to use your imagination. first pictue a hackedup rt314 with cables falling all over the shelf and tacked to the wall dropping down to a cisco switch that I borrowd then to a network everywhere hub then under papers and more cable my pos nortel reversion 0, that I've paid off and bell is milking the profits from me. |
