Facebook Latency

Has anyone else been witnessing awful lag when visiting Facebook the past week or so?

At night - latency when pinging the site is awful...

What's this "Facebook" you speak of? This is foreign to me...

No, but really I don't use Facebook so I can't say. However, after doing a few ping and traceroute tests I did find an issue with one of Verizon's routers but it's flaky.

The routing to FB almost changes constantly.

One second you'll be routed to the West Coast, the next to VA, and then back again.

Something is definitely amiss - not sure if within VZ's network or not.

Facebook has been bad performance wise for some time and not just from my home FiOS connection. Their server virtualization is massive and I think the shear size and volume of the Facebook environment is taking its toll on delivering to the desktop. So even if there is some routing issue somewhere, I don't believe that's the bottom line.

I don't know if it applies, but a poster in the Security forum stated that his traceroute to Facebook was going through China.

I'm in MD and there is something severely wrong with ALTER.net hops, like maybe 1/4 or 1/2 of sites are being routed through a terrible ALTER hop that is causing random packet loss and random high latency ( > 300ms).

Running a trace route to Facebook on my DSL connection shows similar routes; takes me to San Jose. I noticed one thing though, that if you were to use Facebook via an IPv6 Tunnel, it works wonderfully compared to going through the normal means of accessing the site. I confirmed this with a buddy of mine who just remoted into a Virtual Machine on my PC, which has Teredo running on it and logged into Facebook. It of course complained about him logging in from California suddenly (The Hurricane Electric tunnel that was chosen to route through was in San Jose), but it was a lot faster, that's for sure.

Try visiting www.v6.facebook.com and see if there's any difference, for those of us who have IPv6 tunnels running.

It's a .gov domain so I'd sort of expect it to be low, but thats very low.

Arg.... I didn't wipe the bitmap clean enough.... I'm sure this is a huge connection to the Internet.. I get ~20ms from just outside Baltimore, to Facebook.
