Re: changed "adsl test mode" and now I have solid conn

you set the modems ADSL test routines to L3 power mode which is sleep mode (sending nothing). so basically it wont test your line out at all. so you will get a solid connection (since the modem is on full power 24x7) but will experience a ton of CRC/FEC/HEC errors and when the other side drops out your modem wont know it but will think its connected and transmitting anyway. in other words you shut down power optimization and reconnect. modem life might be shortened as well since its not supposed to operate full power 24x7. that might be a good thing and allow you to pick up a st516 when it burns out.

The st516 is a piece of garbage. If you're lucky enough to get one that actually outlasts the warranty period it's a miracle.

Had mine for over 3 years now and still rock solid.

Current DSL connection uptime: 188 days.

The ST516 its self is fine and very reliable.

The power supply's for the ST516... now that's a whole other story.

The included 18V AC adapters make the modem run very hot and unstable, I found myself needing to powercycle mine frequently. (The power light would turn red and it would stop working).

I switched to a omron 24V PSU (with adjustable pot so I can lower it to 22V to match the DC requirements of the modem). My ST516's haven't even needed a reboot since I did that. (many months ago) I reccomend everyone does this.

They barely even get warm to the touch now too, before the left side of the modem got frighteningly hot.

Could you please post a link to where this PSU is available as well as picture/specs. Thx

My two st516's are both passing 3 years of 24/7 use with no issues. Uptimes are 165 days and 163 days respectively.

furthermore, of the 70 or so I have at various client sites, I've replaced 2 in the 3 years I've used this modem exclusively.
