I have a Magellan, and have been quite happy with it. Get one that has lifetime free map updates. A traffic feature is nice too.

i've always owned a Tom Tom. bought my first 'one' back in the summer of 2003 when Tom Tom first got into the US market. it was a remote Bluetooth GPSR that linked to an HP IPaq (i had the 2215) that had the Tom Tom software installed on it. but never the less, you can find a great intro device for less that $100. been seeing them on clearance at several stores; Walmart, Target, etc. they are selling even cheaper online. |

Every brand will have its followers. I have neve rowned anything but a Garmin. I like the interface and such, now when I try others I dislike them. I tell you what I find myself using a lot now is the Navigation on my Android phone through Sprint. |

Re: Do you have GPS? need some advicethey all have glitches. get one that can be updated online, and before any out of town trip UPDATE it. my Street Atlas 2010 program tried to force me to take a long way around thru Missouri the other day because it did not have an update for one of the new highway routes. |

Well, as a Garmin owner in Canada who does a great deal of driving, the maps are not up to date even if you pay their $75 update fee. 10 years after subdivisions are built, their maps are still out of date. Google maps are almost always more reliable for directions... |

As mentioned, your intended use is important. I have three, each for a different use. Best bang for the buck and casual use is my Android phone. Impressive array of free aps for google maps, driving, navigation, hiking, even messaging or tracking your location. The only limitation is that since it's not water proof, I would not rely on it for marine or back country use. |

What do you need your GPS for ?
Hiking in wilderness ? Kayaking or boating on the sea ? great lakes ? Fishing ?
Some gadget for your car ?
As a tool for a private aircraft ?
There are some very different GPS units. Some tend to share some software for mapping, routing, while others are more "standalone". For instance, thge piloting units will have little in common with car units.
But a handheld for hiking suchas as the Garming 60 CsX has "standalone" GPS functions, but you can also use routable maps at which point it uses code that appears to be common with car units. |

Get a TomTom with lifetime maps. Walmart and Target some times have them on sale.
I am not a big fan of the traffic feature on the gps so don't consider that a useful feature. |

I have an entry level Garmin that is basic but very good.
I have had it for 3 years.
I bought my wife and my mother-in-law each a Tom Tom Entry level model with free lifetime maps with wider screen and more features for 89.00 at Sam's Club.
I'm tempted to get a Tom Tom for myself.

Great replies.
The intended use was for a potential job. I had an interview on Tuesday but the money offered wasn't what i was hoping for.
I will keep all this info for future use.
Have a great day everyone. |

As others said why you need a GPS is an important consideration. I've owned a few and my experience has been they will point you in the right direction and get you there eventually, but if you're familiar with the area you can do a much better job.
Since most of my driving is freeway driving to work I don't need one on a daily basis, and don't currently have traffic on the one I have. It is nice to be able to take any exit and head in the general direction I want and have the GPS route me on surface street or to the next freeway on ramp to get around back ups. |
