No worries... wasn't being mean spirited or anything when I pointed that out... The Op did have LOTS of questions and kept wanting more and more clarification.

The Op appeared to be confused even more when finally deciding to pull the trigger and make the switch because they interacted with representatives both with TW and EarthLink that were totally unaware of what they could and could not do to assist in the switch. I read previously where you noted the same issues... :D

I am glad the Op was finally able to get through the confusion and get things switched.

Sorry, but TWC's agent was clueless about how to properly handle this, if only to tell the caller they need to call Earthlink. In fact, my cousin just went through his own nightmare here in Rochester today trying to jump back to Road Runner from Earthlink. The rep didn't have a clue what he was trying to do and was scheduling him for an installation service call.

I'm not defending Earthlink, who uses offshore reps for their online chat sessions who are capable of only typing boilerplate answers, and has some outdated information on their website, but TW is not shiny clean here either.

Just a friendly reminder, you no longer have Road Runner, and should now post any questions about EarthLink in the EarthLink forums. I have no problems answering any of your questions you post... let's just be sure we are communicating in the correct areas.

To answer your question though:

1. You need to unplug your cable modem. usually for 1 minute
2. Shutdown you computer.
3. Connect your router to the cable modem, and your computer to the router as you have before.
4. Power your router on and also power your computer back on.
5. Once the router is powered up, plug your cable modem back in. After the cable modem loads back up, that should do the trick, assuming your router is setup correctly. If it is not setup, you should now be able to log into the router and set it up as needed.

Your cable modem remembers what device it was connected to (in this case it was your computer.) Unplugging it clears this information out so you can connect other devices as needed.

What you were seeing when connecting to Road Runner was the SpeedBoost. You standard plan was probably 7 or 10 depending on your area and would boost higher.

Your Earthlink plan looks like it is up to 10Mbps and that is basically the same thing you had, it just will not have the Speedboost.

Is that correct? It is the 49.95/month one.

And the one i have right now is the 29.95/month for 1st 6 months and then 41.95/month afterwards. So its the 6mbps-10mbps one?

Cool... Though I point out, it shows what you can get for what price... If you did not see the 29.95 plan listed, it is not available - do not assume here ;) Me and you have typed so many numbers - I just do not want you confused :D

But it sounds like you should have no problem, assuming you speak with a representative with EarthLink ordering.

More bad advice possibly based around the fact that areas differ with rates and even the fact that Earthlink is available.

IF you want to change your service to Earthlink then call them.
Dont call Time Warner.

Start with Earthlink and then let them transfer you to Time Warner Cable. They probably have a special contact number with TWC to reach knowledgeable reps on how to proceed with a switch to Earthlink. All the rep has to do is reconfigure the billing profile to Earthlink. No install fees, no install visit, no double billing. It's all pretty routine.

I did get a reminder there are a few TWC franchises that don't offer Earthlink, Buffalo being one of them (perhaps because it was an Adelphia system before?).

But I said, since i have the cable box from road runner, why would i need a technician to come over? They said installation and cable box was free and i told them i thought i could use the same one. They said a technician has to come to your home to do the switch at your place. Can someone explain how they do this switch? I thought it was going to be real easy where i didn't even need to meet a technician and they were just going to switch the internet like that..

Can someone explain some of this? I'm going to call them back tomorrow. So after 6 months when i change back to road runner, then the road runner technician will have to come to my home? So if i take the cable box from earthlink, that means i have to return the return back to road runner right? But if i keep my current modem, i don't have to return it?

As Racerbob indicates, call TW directly ;)

When you call EarthLink, they get the order together, place you on hold, and get TW on the phone and tell them to setup your account. It is TW's network and infrastructure -- EarthLink just rides on it...

Calling TW directly just cuts the middleman/potential problems out of the picture. They will cancel your RR and setup billing for EarthLink. Your bill will still come from and be paid to TW.

As for username, that is something that should be covered during the phone call - they will usually tell you they will mail it (USmail). You will not need it immediately after the switch... you only need it to access e-mail. You can surf the web without any problems while waiting on the username/password.

As for your other questions, your Internet connection should be active within an hour ( usually just minutes) after the switch. They will ask you to unplug your cable modem and plug it back in... so it can clear out your RR config and load the new EarthLink config. It's that simple.

It will not matter when you make the switch, as you've already been "stung" by being out of your 12-month agreement.

If/when you make the switch from/to RR/EarthLink, if you are already in a billing cycle, they will simply prorate the days of service and only charge you for the number of days you've already used until you made the switch.

So for example, you are already billed regular rates for RR @ 64.90, and you call to switch to EarthLink today, your next bill will reflect the changes/credits/prorating and will be reduced from 64.90 to whatever the prorate works out to in your case. Then you will be billed by TW for EarthLink at the rates set for your area for EarthLink for that promotional period - which is currently six (6) months - then it will go to their listed regular rate if you do not cancel/switch.

All billing and installation is taken care of by TW, so you should not have any problems at all.

You are correct in thinking if you stay on top of the situation, you can keep from getting "bill stung". Just keep that in mind if you switch to EarthLink for six (6) months, you want to call before the end of the sixth (6th) month and switch back to RR -- that way you will pay the "advertised/promotion" rates only.

I have heard many people say they switch cable/Internet/phone quite regular. All you have to do is stay on top of things, and you will be able to switch back and forth and only pay promotional rates for your services - just as long as you are willing to keep up with when you need to switch things around, go for it! So many already are...

These companies do not care... as you are termed a new customer usually in no more than 60-90 days after cancelling services in most areas and can qualify for whatever promotional pricing that is available at that time.

In many areas, customers are able to jump back to Time Warner Cable's new customer promos as early as two weeks after leaving. That's not true everywhere, however. You can bounce back and forth between these promotions indefinitely. I've watched people do it since 2009 with no problems, other than forgetting to make the change after the promo expires and getting bill sting.

Rates are advertised to start as cheap as $29.95, but again, it depends on your area. Also, EL does not have PowerBoost like RR does.

The only options in my area where i live in for fast internet are road runner or verizon dsl and thats it. I don't have that option for optimum online cable which i hear is great and a lot cheaper than road runner.

I'm kind of thinking about going back to verizon dsl now because of this.

Thoughts?
