Re: Moving to NYC with only $500 - Can it work?

I feel perfectly safe walking any street in almost any neighborhood in the city at all hours of the day or night.

I'm going to go out on the limb and poke you on this one -- I don't think you can just cruise "any almost neighborhood".. let's not forget, we do have some areas that are patrolled by NYPD, but still in the state of chaos for the most part. I'll throw myself into this mess.. as I've lived in Crown Heights, Brooklyn my entire life. It rough here; trust me.

Some of those movies are actually real life scenarios of 2011 New York City.
Has anyone here seen "Brooklyn's Finest"? It was a film based on three NYPD officers dealing with Brooklyn's crimes, etc.. and their day-to-day lives. It's just one of the prime examples of some Hollywood movies are point-on, somewhat.

We have our crime areas just like most other urban areas around the US, but its become a more "safe" in sense of NYPD is just one call away.. with 5-man squad patrols on foot. Now the time from the call to reaching you varies, largely.

New York City is still awesome and I love it here.

One of my acquaintance's daughters is a cop in Brownsville...I hear enough stories to keep myself out of there

With the police in the area, of course. I won't neglect the fact that, this area is slowly changing - the appearance (condos left and right), the people.. it's all about the outcome of "quality of life" rules these days. I'm grateful things are changing, though.
