There are many options for connecting external hdds to computers. I'm currently using an eSATA RAID enclosure with 4x2TB hdds inside in RAID-5. It also has USB2.0, Firewire 400 and 800. USB3.0 is picking up for future plans. Beware of some enclosures though. Some require a controller that supports port multipliers which most don't. But they sometimes include a pci controller for that. For enclosures that don't req port multipliers, you can plug it into any eSATA port and it'll work.
