Re: upgrade wireless router

is their anything faster than 1000 mbps in the near future?

i am plannig on getting a new desktop or laptop this year, which would have usb 3.0 and/or SATA 6.0 gbps , so i dont want to bottleneck transfer speeds to my harddrives because of my router

Gigabit networking won't be saturated by a SATA 3 drive. The 6.0 / sec speed is a theoretical max speed that you will never reach due to overhead and other issues.

As far as I know, there is nothing faster than gigabit wired networking when using copper. If you want to go through the work and expense of fiber, you can get greater speeds for network throughput, but HDDs and other devices won't be able to use greater speeds, so, at least at this time, anything faster would be pointless.

As for the router you pointed to, I have never used that brand, so I can't have an opinion. As far as the wired card, it is a cheap card, so throughput may suffer. Personally, I like Intel cards for wired networking. Yes, they are more expensive, but they are rock solid, good throughput and good driver support.

Whoops, I misread your post, so this edit is here:

You don't specify the make / model or age of your laptop, but you do say it does not have "N". So, most likely, you will need to get a card that fits the card slot on your laptop, and supports wireless "N". Depending on your laptop, this maybe a PCMCIA card or one of the new compact cards. If your laptop is one of the few that doesn't have any card slots, you probably won't be able to upgrade it.

The linksys card you mentioned is a 10/100 card.

As you noticed, the 1Gbps will only help on your local network. And your devices themselves need to be fast enough to keep up with that. Older PCs will be maxed out. You don't have to replace your router to get gigabit speeds. Simply add a gigabit switch to your router and connect all the gigabit speed devices there. Speaking wireless, N will not buy you a whole lot. True the spec goes "up to" 300Mbps, but in practice there are tons of factors that do and will slow you down. If you are certain that you've maxed out G at 54Mbps, then I'd say look at N.
