Just thought I'd add my 2 cents for the information of the forum. I've looked into that site, the methods used, and tested them. It will only work for certain systems, like those used in the UK. They will not work on almost all systems in the US because the cable system monitors the cm file and it checks that cm file everytime you renew your lease. I know my lease renews every 4 hours. You would have to go through the spoofing process every 4 hours if you wanted to keep it uncapped. Also, most Systems use Syslogging and SMNP traps and events. This will alert the cable company of any tampering with your settings. Try if you like, but you've got a better chance uncapping it with a sledgehammer.

As for the rest of those out there. ANY THING can be/has been hacked, its just a question of whether or not someone thinks it is worth hacking. Nothing is this world is hack proof. White Hackers (usally former black hackers) prove this each and every day. Thats why windows looks like it has so many holes(it's on 85+% of computers around the world, if it were the other way around and linux/unix it would be them that look like there full of holes). The truth is if its a popular service(.net, hotmail has been hacked numorus times), os, or application, there's a hack. Yes hacking can be detected in all of these senerios. Its just a matter of desire of the hacker.

The frustration arises as much from charter's minimalistic attitude toward customer service as its inability to offer a consistently high level of performance. You're attitude that its-only-one-reported-instance, or its-not-in-my-area, or jvltech's more-people-don't-complain-than-do are just more examples of this.

I do appreciate you're presence in this forum, it's just about the only thing charter is doing right PR wise. Raising rates, underperforming servers, down servers, inconsistent/slow speeds, Low caps (relative to ANY other cable ISP), torturous helpdesk/crediting process, pass-the-blame/Blame-the-user tech support, etc, is definitely NOT the way to win customer loyalty.

It's obvious, to anyone who knows my posts, that I'm only a customer as long as I have to be. When another broadband option comes my way, I'm definitely history. I doubt there is anything Charter could do to change that. Well, there is, they could become Roadrunner or OOL. ;) Actually I'd just settle for consistently working services, high speeds (higher than the cap, so my average is around the cap level) and provide realistic newsgroup speeds.

Go ahead and ignore/belittle customers, we will all feel really sorry for you when you loose your job cause a competitor came in and took your customers away.

funny that roadrunner and others who don't cap modems or set their caps very high (3mbps?) doesn't go out of business.

It's clearly not a matter of staying in business, it's about maximizing profits. It's a management decision to offer the least service possible for the competition in that area. If users don't have a choice for Broadband service, then charter has it made.

This is the same management style that says "why hire a competent network administrator for $25/hr when I can hire 2 totally incompetent techs for $8 each? And their quality of service shows it (ie: webpages.charter.net/speed/routing/email/dns/dhcp problems)

By uncapping your modem, you're breaking the management of the network. You're helping yourself to cheat the system, and you're hurting everyone else who's not cheating the system.

Oh, and it violates the TOS and AUP, and your service is then subject to termination.

I agree that 8mbit down would be "nice" but I'm not willing to be such a luser to everyone else... YYMV, of course. :)

The reason is beacuse the modems checks the ethernet interface for the .CM file first then uses the RF interface. So you would need a copy of the CM file that the ISP uses and you would also have to have TFTP setup on your computer. Whenever the modem reboot then you would have to redo it, its not really that easy....but is possible.

You can hack on cm files all day and it will do you zero good. The CMTS will check the checksum of the cm file in use and deny you access.

Even if that feature is turned off, traffic-shaping on the CMTS will still limit you.

Basically, the modem is just a hunk of worthless plastic, until you "purchase" the config file that allows you onto their network. When you mess with the config file, you mess with Charter's property, regardless of who owns the modem.

Also, with that "purchase" of a config file, you give Charter, either explicitly (if it is in the terms of service or AUP) or implicitly (by allowing them to place it in your modem, and agreeing to the aforementioned legal documents), all the permission they need to remove service from the modem, should you do something against those documents (such as "uncapping" yourself).

I wonder how this would affect customers that own their own modem? After all, Charter is putting software on the customer's modem. I am not sure where Charter would be given this right to do this when the customer does own their own modem. But, I am curious as to what legal argument that Charter might offer to address this situation.
