Okay, went out and got a Netgear wireless router. I have the router set to DMZ on the modem, firewall is off except for WAN ping on the modem. Forwarded ports 1-49151, and still have the same problem with IRC. I was able to get a whois and even post one line, then the connection was reset by peer. When I reconnected I did not get autojoin to any of my channels and could not join manually.

You have it setup wrong. You need to bridge the modem. Look in the direct thread for instructions.

Okay got it. There is a setting to change from gateway to modem, duh! I can hook right up to undernet now.
It's still seems odd that the old modem which had worked fine until last week and the new modem both had the same issue, not to mention the tech support guy telling me Brighthouse was blocking undernet and DALnet.
